Patina And Value

I hadn't thought of that when I assigned a value to this first list of coins; however, I was generous in my evaluation in order to not hurt feelings so early on in my relationship with this club. I am relatively certain they will provide documentation of their discoveries if the buyer would like it. Let's see how they react to my first report. I ust submitted it in the past couple of minutes.

What I fear:
You tell them their coin is worth $25.
They take the coin to three dealers whose best offer is $5.
They call the dealer a crook OR they decide you gave them bad council.

I'd rather hurt their feelings upfront. If I were a detectorist, I would not sell this coin for what it is worth simply because I found it. I wonder how many of the club members are in it for the money and how many have a bucket full of overcleaned, precious junk including coins.

I agree that with signed letters giving find locations you could add a few $s to the value. It would be a clever way of making 'lesser' coins stand out in the crowd on ebay.

I suspect 99% of their coins will fall into the $5-$10 area, as do most MD finds including the Gallienus in this thread. The cleanibg does detract from the value but not massively to most of the ancient buying crowd.

I guess your real job here will be to spot among the MDs coins the ones that stand out in quality or rarity and flag them up. All others I would just assign the usual $5-$10 as selling these low value coins can be a crap shoot, one day $2, the next day $20.

Well, I may have bitten off more than I can chew. Not really, but I just received about 200 coins to identify. This will be fun for me, but time consuming. Just a cursory view of the images show some in deplorable condition that will require an awful lot of study to find an attribution. However, most, are in fair to good condition and should be relatively easy. I have already identified one coin that the MD club had mis-attributed. Here is the last communications I had with the club president:




As you can see, he has asked for help/information on cleaning these coins. As most of you already know, I no longer participate in the cleaning process. I was never very good at it anyway. If one or more of you would like to give me a paragraph or so to provide to the club members regarding cleaning, I would greatly appreciate it.

One other note. He has provided me with Google Earth maps with precise locations of each and every find. This makes things very interesting.

This will be a labor of love for me. It should help to strengthen my attribution skill, don't ya think? Plus, if I see something I may want, well, I suppose I may be able to have first shot at it. Kinda like the English noblemen in Scotland, eh? You know: prima nocta
