Hey all,

Been saving up my penny dump money to pick up a box of halves, and looking for some general advice since I have never gotten a box before.

Some thoughts:
- Should I call around to banks to see who can order what for me, or does it make a difference to actually visit a bank in person to ask?
- What should I expect to pay in premium over the $500 for the box? I have ZERO idea if it is different per area, and I am sure it is different per bank/amount you order. What does everyone here pay?

Any advice in general would be welcomed.

Thanks!

MadMortician,. - go to your bank and ask if they will order you a box, if not - go to other banks in the area and first ask if they have any rolls - sometimes boxes can be lurking - not to mention CWR's have high % probability of silver - although they could be someone elses dump, but I always take a chance, unless I see that it's one of mine that has traveled.

Also// sift through the silver hunters thread - it's on par with the Lincoln thread.

Edited to say:

I have found that credit unions and "local" banks are more than willing to do it for free for their members -

I have walked in to Chase and Wells Fargo branches and neither will charge you (in my city at least) to order a box of halves if you have an account. You should pay ZERO premium for the box. I have only went in person and both times they have offered to order halves for me. Banks receive shipments weekly so you may have to wait a bit.

The banks in my area will get you a box of halves ($500) without charging anything for doing so if you have an account with them. If you don't have an account with them, they'll begrudgingly give you whatever small number of loose halves they have on hand at the teller stations but that'll be the limit to their hospitality. My two banks want the halves back unrolled in one of their plastic transit bags of $500 worth of halves so they can ship them out straightaway. They don't like having to keep loose rolls in their vault and count them daily while they wait to get up to the $500 mark so they can ship them.

Do it in person much better that way. you shouldnt pay a premium on the box. The only problem with ordering is most banks have to order 1000$ per order, still shouldnt be a problem, just tell them you want a box every week and go from there.

Ask your penny pick up bank, if you already have a relationship with them. I hit 7 random banks last saturday looking for cwr rolls, 2 of them offered to order me some without me even asking, just get out there, much better then phone calls for sure.
