I do not have the trained eye to grade coins as most of you do. What grade would you give this 1889-CC Morgan? This is one of many coins I received from my late grandfather who collected over many years. I was thinking of sending this to PCGS for grading, though was not sure if the scratch on the obverse would keep it from getting graded normal. Any and all comments would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help! Edited by rum_n_cola 08/22/2012 6:37 pm

It has the look, I'm afraid, of having been very heavily polished. The lack of any significant marks on the surface is very inconsistent with the wear present, and the "halos" around the letters and stars are indicative of areas where the polishing did not reach. The level of detail is in the high VF - low XF range, but a cleaning this harsh has reduced the coin from having a potential value of maybe $3000 to one which would fetch less than $1000. This is a shame.

The luster of the coin looks very reminiscent of something that has been whizzed probably so that they could pass this coin as mint state and make a killing. The bright side is that this coin appears to be genuine and possibly a match for VAM-5. Sending it off to be graded would be a good idea to confirm that it is indeed genuine. I think it might just receive a EF details grade. Still a very nice coin that probably has some sentimental value attached to it.

Unfortunate that this coin was whizzed I think the details are XF-40 or better.
Many 1893-S and 1889-CC Morgans are cleaned but still fetch a great price due to the rarity of the coins in any type of high grade. I think bidders would still salivate at a chance to buy this one - might fetch $1500 or so.

I would say AU to AU+ details but definately polished/whizzed. This is still a nice coin and I would not send in for grading as it is what it is. Some collectors do not care if a coin has been polished and this coin is a very collectible date. Very nice coin none the less. Many collectors would pay AU prices for this coin!

I think EF-AU cleaned also. Very collectible despite being cleaned. Depends on how harshly cleaned it is in hand- if it still has a lot of eye appeal, it could go for AU money.

It won't sell for AU money -- I would much rather have a slabbed problem-free AU 1889-CC than a polished coin
At VF money, however, it starts to look appealing. At F money, it would be a slam dunk

Thank you all for your grading help. Good to know that even if it's cleaned, it can still be valuable!
