This is a great piece of history that was given to me by my late grandfather. Do you think this is genuine, and if so, what would you grade this? I am new to the hobby and do not have a trained eye to determine grade. Thanks in advance for any and all responses. Edited by rum_n_cola 08/22/2012 9:48 pm

Marvelous! All 1802 Half Cents are overdates; you can see the remnants of the 0 under the 2. This is reverse of 1802; the other option, reverse of 1800, would be far too rare to hope for. Grade... VG 8-10? If no one thinks it's damaged. A very pretty half penny, worth a pretty penny!

I disagree with VG, I think this coin hits F12 if not F15. It does however, have a pretty nasty scratch on the reverse and some issues with the rim that will probably cause it to no be graded.
I give it F Details - Scratched/damaged Pretty coin nonetheless!

I think it nets VG given the hit on the obverse (hole attempt?) and rim divets on the reverse and the long straight scratch on the reverse. Details are F, but would net VG. This coin has personality!

Nice coin - surfaces look original // F-12 sounds about right for grade

Thank you for all of your replies. I do not think this is a fake as it was purchased in the 1930's by my great great grandfather who just passed at age of 102. He left over 475lbs of coins. This is one of my favorites. It is neat to think of how many people handled this over the last 210 years.

Doesn't seem that anyone here has suspected a fake. Does your great great grandfather's collection have anything else this old for us to see? Oh, I forgot...

Thank you for the welcome and all of your responses. I will be listing more coins in the near future. One I think you all might be interested in is the 1834 5D capped gold coin that was in the inheritance. Pawn shop guy offered me $8,000 cash on the spot. This made me believe it is worth lots more! I will try and get that photoed and listed so you can let me know your thoughts. Thanks again to all!

VG-8. An awesome coin because of the early date.
