Other than the currency museum, and the RCM tour does anybody have any suggestions (coin/money related) things to do while in Ottawa? Also, any suggested coin stores (mainly looking for Newfoundland coins at a good price). Thanks in advance Ross.

Universal Coins at the street mall corner of Bank and Hunt Club and Sean Isaac's store, downtown Almonte (30-45 min pleasant drive - pub by the waterfall and a nice place to visit).

You've got the two best spots on your agenda - the Currency Museum and the Mint.
If you have lots of time and access to a car, then the trip to Universal might be worth it. Be advised though that it's a pretty small shop and about 20-30 minutes of city driving from the Mint depending on traffic.
The other coin shop in the city is Ashbrook on Richmond Rd. near Woodroofe. Also about 20 minutes from the Mint though most of the drive is scenic/historic past Parliament and along the River. Ashbury is slightly larger than Universal.
Alliance Coin in Almonte is a good shop though it's 50 minutes, mostly highway driving, from the Mint.
Enjoy your visit and happy hunting for those Newfoundlanders.
BTW, not sure when you are in town but there is this event.
September 9, 2012 Ottawa, Ontario Ottawa Coin & Stamp Dealers Association Monthly bourse at the RA Centre, 2451 Riverside Dr., Ottawa. Show open from 9.30am to 3.00pm. Usually 17 dealers in attendance. Free parking & free admission. Door prize.

Thanks guys. I will definately go to Universal, but don't think that I'll make it out to Almonte. We'll see.
I'm heading out today after I get off work, so I won't be able to make it to the coin show on the 9th. Too bad.

Do either of you know if the coins have been returned in the currency museum? Last time that I was there they had moved much of their collection while doing some renovations.

Thanks SPP for passing on that sad news. The last time I was in the store, I noted that Andrew wasn't there but didn't think much of it - assumed he was just away. Very sad news. He was far too young. middross, it looks like the renos are still happening but I don't have any first hand info. http://www.currencymuseum.ca/2009/0...ery-guide-2/

It's been awhile since I've been there but it's not really easy to find. If you're heading south on Bank, it's just past Prohockey Life and Harvey's in a strip mall. I believe it is in the same building as Tuscon's bar (which is closed). Their signage is small and hard to see from the street. If you got to Hunt Club, you went too far. This is noted on their website "We are located on the northwest corner of Bank Street and Hunt Club Road. Just look for the Harvey's Restaurant and Microplay!" They closed at 5:30 today but I just called their number and got vm saying they are closed for the Canada Day weekend.

Ashbrook reopened a couple of weeks ago. They are open from 12-4pm Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Andrew's father, Alan, made an appearance at the Ottawa Numismatic Society meeting last night...

middross - South Keys is at Bank and Hunt, that is NOT the street mall Universal is located. They are at the small street mall, the one with the Harveys and the new Shwarma place.
Universal is closed on all long weekends, so it will not be open on the next (labour day). There are a few regulars who visit the store on saturdays. Frank does not have a great stock but always have surprises to show - if he learns what you like, Frank will unearth amazing stuff.

Thanks for the help guys.
I eventually found Universal (no thanks to Google maps). They were closed for the day, so I figured that I would head there before I left for home the next day. I decided instead that I would visit the coin shop in Almonte, since I was actually staying in the Ottawa Municiple Campground (near Kanata), and was planning on taking highway 7 home (Almonte would be on the way).
Unfortunately they are closed on Mondays (as I found out upon arriving there). SOOOOOOOO, I didn't get to go to any of the stores during my visit.
I did get to go on the mint tour (Saturday, so no production), which was still pretty cool. My wife, daughter and I got a family photo with the 28lb bar of gold. My daughter got a new stuffed toy, and I got to drool over the Star Wars coins from the New Zealand mint. The boxes are better than the coins, as the make Star Wars sounds when they are opened.
Again, thanks to everybody who chimed in, and now I know where everything is for next time (I usually visit every 6 monthsor so).
