I recently purchased this at auction and I am planning on sending it off to get graded. I do not normally get coins graded and I was wondering what it might come back as. I was planning on using IGC or ANACS, which one would you recommend?

Wherever you send it, it will more than likely come back as a "details" grade because of the rim damage at 12 o'cock and the scratch/dig at 11:30 (second T in STATES) on the obverse.

It's still 100% better than the one I don't have!

Given its present condition you would be better off sending it to PCGS or NGC because if you do decide to sell it you'll get more for it in one of those two slabs than if it was in an ICG or ANACS slab.

I would rather send it to ANACS to get a detail number grade as what oih82w8 said, there's no way PCGS or NGC assigning a number grade to this one.

VF Details, but that unfortunate damage turns an $800+ coin into an under-$500 one.
Rest in Peace

VF/XF details. Rim damage, gashed....and the surfaces don't look original. On the plus side, I dont see anything that makes me question authenticity. Most raw $3 gold coins are fake, so that is always a concern when purchasing one of these. ANACS would be fine I think, verifying authenticity is all that matters.

taking a quick look at a couple up of these up on HA, the 78 is bolder on both coins there too. and the shadow or doubling around the three is the same as on this. (but just a rookie, trying to pay a little back.)

The 3 on the reverse is doubled, which I forgot to mention. Does this increase the value of this coin or is the doubling normal.

Many of the coins I looked at while researching my answer had that doubling.

VF Details, the rim ding is unfortunate and drops it down quite a bit.
