I got 2 Random year 1/2 ounce Platinum Eagles from APMEX. I assume they are both bullion coins but was wondering what the difference in the finish is.

Really beautiful coins! Is that just toning on the 1999?

I was wrong... "Bullion Pt Eagles had a reverse-proof-like finish until 2003. From 2004 on, they have a burnished look."

Thanks for the info on the finish change Drsandman2.
Somehow the photos came out all brown. They are actually ...well Platinum color.

Nice pieces - I don't have much platinum at all but I really like this particular design/coin.

I am curious about this. I have read the term a number of times but just what does burnished mean? How is it done? It sounds like some kind of heat treatment.

When in terms of metals, burnishing usually refers to the polishing of one metal by rubbing it with another piece of metal. This doesn't give a mirror finish but more of a satin semi gloss look. I think however this term is being more loosely applied when it comes to coins to simply mean "satin finish".

Ah, thanks for the explanation of burnishing.

I have seen some ASEs and other coins that contained both areas that looked like a proof / mirror finish and frosted areas. These were very striking and attractive in appearance due to this contrast.
