I am curious about this. I have read the term a number of times but just what does burnished mean? How is it done? It sounds like some kind of heat treatment.
When in terms of metals, burnishing usually refers to the polishing of one metal by rubbing it with another piece of metal. This doesn't give a mirror finish but more of a satin semi gloss look. I think however this term is being more loosely applied when it comes to coins to simply mean "satin finish".
I have seen some ASEs and other coins that contained both areas that looked like a proof / mirror finish and frosted areas. These were very striking and attractive in appearance due to this contrast.
