This isn't a us mint product. These were issued privately by the Lone Star Mint.

of course with that accurate assessment. This is not a coin but a privately minted medal of minimal value.

dsfreeworld you seem to have a genuine interest in the USA commemorative series ... so I politely suggest that perhaps a reference or two might help support your growing knowledge.

The Red Book would be a great place to start ... and there are many specialized commemorative references that we would be pleased to suggest if you were interested.

Sorry for the delay in responding, I've been off-line for a few days...

As noted by others, this is a privately-struck medal vs. a coin. It was produced under the name "Lone Star Mint" but that is really a misnomer. The Lone Star Mint is actually a coin shop rather than a mint; the ‘Texas Penny' medal you have was struck by an unknown (at least to me) private mint for the coin shop. The coin store is located in Plano, Texas and is an ongoing business.

The medals were struck back in 1983 during the LSM's first year in business. Thousands were struck in bronze, along with limited numbers in silver and gold. My understanding is that the mintage of the silver pieces was in the hundreds with the gold being even more limited. The medals were sold at the shop, as well as at local coin shows attended by LSM staff.

Though the card the medal is mounted on seems to suggest that the ‘Texas Penny' was just the first "Coined Art" piece that was to be produced, it was, in fact, the only such piece produced -- a one medal series!

Hope that helps a little!

well, just a few...at this point I will only pick up whatever I can get a good deal on, like the GW's from 1982...i was not going to pass up $10 price points when spot puts them at $11, its instant profit or at least break even...in today's market! who knows what will be in 20 years...

as far as commemorative coins for my collecting hobby go, once I get the Oregon Trail, Texas and New Rochelle (My wife's hometown and where she and I lived in our first apartment) I am done "collecting" commemorative coins...

nice series however...
