My dad's Morgan dollar. I wanted to see what you guys thought about it. Pictures aren't the best as I have to use my phone to take photos.

Is it just me or do coins look much better in person than they do in a picture?

This one, unfortunately, has been heavily cleaned. Any value beyond melt has been destroyed. This is especially clear in the first two images.

And yeah, cameras are merciless with coins.

Oh bummer. Is there any way for a new-to-coins person to tell if a coin has been cleaned?

The Hairline scratches across the entire coin, is one thing to look for.

fish451.

Your dads coin appears to be in About Uncirculated condition which means it saw a little circulation in commerce.
There would have been original mint luster evident on this coin had it not been cleaned. The matte appearance and circular hairline scratches, are a sure sign of a cleaned coin. Beyond that would be a polishing which is even worse.

It could fool anyone into thinking that it is an AU and when I first looked at it, that is what I thought. The major scratches on the right side of the obverse maybe makes me think that it might have been cleaned. Nice coin though.....

I agree with AU details, cleaned. The hairlines and the bright even shine indicated cleaning.

I'd have to agree with cleaned but AU grade.. Still a nice coin! As mentioned the first 2 photos give it away with the hairline scratches.

Harshly cleaned. The good news is it is still worth silver value which, nowadays, is fairly considerable

The pictures are good enough to tell she was heavily polished; poor little thing...

Yup, she's had a harsh cleaning unfortunately. On the positive side, this coin is worth a lot since it was given to you by your father. No coin cleaning can ever take that away. Hold onto it and pass it down through the family tree.

Sometimes a gift from family can have sentimental value but if that were my coin I think I would sell it for the bullion silver value and upgrade to a problem-free AU or low MS example. There won't be that much cost difference and you get a much nicer coin to show off ...
