I'm a carpenter and every now and then I go work with a good friend of mine doing concrete forming when they get swamped. Its been about 6 weeks since I went working with them but today I got into their work truck and they always have change scattered around in the cup holders, floor, seats and arm rests. Anyways, I took a look in my armrest today and saw an American penny and naturally I have to check out the date and low and behold, a 1918 Wheat cent! Was pretty excited since it was such an unlikely place to find one considering a search boxes of pennies and all. Its actually my oldest find in circulation. Just thought I would share.

Oh almost forgot, It had a few deep scratches but over all, thought it wasnt too bad considering its almost 100 years old. Oh and no mint mark that I could tell. CHEERS!

Yeah it's a little weird asking people what change they have, but sometimes it's worth it.

Great find! I love finding coins in circulation! I love thinking about where the coins been, what it's paid for and who's held it. I buy uncirculated coins, and honestly I find some in circulation that are in way better shape/grades (state and ATB Quarters in-particular) than the Unc's... I actually started a few other folders just for them.
No Basebal's not alone... I ask my friends if I can look through there change ALL the time.. One everyday or two.. He'll even call me if he gets something interesting or he's not sure if I need it for one of my sets.. I actually just gave him lists to watch for a few weeks ago!
And I also have a bank teller friend and she also (now) has a list and pulls anything silver or interesting for me, as well as goes into the vault and brings customer and mint rolls out (only a few rolls and 1 denomination at a time, but she'll make return trips until I'm broke or bored, usually the first) and let's me go through them right at the counter and switch out what I need... As long as there not busy
I'm horrible, even my mom has lists of what I need... Lol... And the fore mentioned and obviously my fiancé...And my fiancé brings home some serious pre 1900 coins.. Daily... But that's a whole nother story

On a side note carpenters have great luck finding coins in my area, I live in a OLD newengland town (western mass) and a few of my carpenter/contractor friends have made amazing finds in walls, under floors, attic corners...Best I've found was a 1862 Indian head (pretty decent shape) under a board in my friends moms old barn in southern Vermont while we were helping his sister rebuild the horse stalls (my buddy lives down here with his grandparents), or rather, rebuilding them for her.. She didn't help much... But that penny made it all worth it ;)
