I'm not expert in Mercs, but it doesn't look like it. If you could provide a closer shot of the date maybe it would help, but even at this distance it should be readily visible. Check out this page, http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-4301.html for an example at about the same distance as your photo.

The doubling on the 4 is more apparent to the right and yours looks wider on the left. And the 1 underdate is very apparent to the left side of the 2, but I don't see the top of the 1 poking out of the two like it should. Sorry.

I agree that it seems unlikely. There should be at least some of the 1 preserved inside or right next to the 2 since the devices, including the date, would provide some protection from their relief.

i have several 42's and a 36 that appear to be Machine Doubling.you can tell by the date being more pronounced.on a true double,everything will be equally high.
