I came across this cent and saw that it one looked odd,
The 1 in this 1857 is different that the 1 in other 1857s.
Did I discover a variety?
or is it counterfiet

Thanks!

I'll guess it was caused by junk stuck in the 1 on the die (filled die).

How would grease (or whatever) shorten the shaft of the 1, drawing the bottom serif and the flag at the top closer together?

Resisting urge to make a joke inappropriate for the forum...

Good, it passed.

Reminds me a bit of what I've seen on wheats where PMD causes a number to move. However, if something hit the top of the one, it sure did it cleanly. Don't see any way that the die could have caused this.

I agree with ldhair here; it must have been something on the die. The same date punch was often used on many dies. The 1881 IHCs are an example, where the 81 is crooked due to a crooked date hub for that year.

Could also be PMD, but the photo is too fuzzy to tell for sure.

Something hit the top of the 1, forcing it down, thus resulting in PMD IMO.
