I've been skulking through vcoins and numismall looking to complete my set of posthumous coins honoring Constantine. I haven't found what I am looking for yet, but I am developing a real appreciation for these types of coins. Most are a little sorrowful, but I hadn't seen/noticed any like this kind from Valerian II honoring his grandfather.

Valerian I is waving from astride an eagle. It looks happy, unless the eagle is flying somewhere horrible and Valerian I is waving frantically for help.

There was also this one, featuring Jupiter riding (apparently side-saddle) on a goat. A little strange looking, but still cool.

There is alot more diversity in this type of coin than I had previously noticed. I am thinking about venturing into the divus coins as an actual direction for my collection. Anyone have any cool posthumous coins to show off or any thoughts on the subject?

A posthumous group would make a nice collection. I've never really thought about them till now.

Two nice coins, if they aren't too expensive I'd say go for them.

I don't think much is known about Valerian II other than he had a very brief reign with the empire in a tumultuous state. I think he died when he was still a teenager, but I don't know much about him other than he was son of Gallienus and grandson of Valerian I.

I just saw this bad boy on vcoins. I am almost drooling on my keyboard. I don't think I have ever seen one of these where the hand of God has 5 fingers, usually it is 4. Pretty sweet indeed.

I am just getting into them as of this morning lol. Been wanting all of the ones in memory of Constantine I, but since I wasn't looking for other ones I never noticed how many types there are, going all the way back to Augustus.

The Valerian ones are pretty reasonable, 50-70 dollars I think. But I went a little crazy this month with auctions, Etsy artwork and some poorly timed car repairs. The Constantine is 150 euro. Probably worth it, but not to me lol.

I believe the image of someone waving from the back of an eagle is suppose to be Valerian II. This coin was issued after his death in 257/8 AD. RIC 9 Posthumous Antoninianus. 257-258 AD. DIVO VALERIANO CAES, radiate & draped bust right / CONSACRATIO, eagle flying right, bearing the deceased young Caesar to heaven.

Ah, I see what you mean. The ones on vcoins say it is Valerian I, but all the ones I noticed were from the same store and they probably made a mistake. Wildwinds says exactly what jwharper said.

Because of not much of the legend showing on the first coin I don't think I would pay any more than $50. I think the second coin is the better buy. IMO $187 is way too much for the constantine even with the five fingers showing.

. I think $50m is too high. I have the first coin in my collection. The obverse legend on mine is readable, but the reverse is not in great shape. I paid a total of $12.50 for mine in 2011. I have bid on coins like the second coin, but have always been outbid.

The posthumous Constantine is not worth $187 in my opinion. It's nice. But not that nice.

True, the denarii seem priced a bit high and if/when I pull my wallet out I will do some shopping around. But in the end, if I find one that makes me tingle in all the right places, I would be willing to overpay. I really like the Constantine, and it does share the highly unusual wheel placement that Dougsmit commented on in the horses smackdown https://goccf.com/t/126939&whichpage=3 but I would have to do more research before paying what they are asking for it.

God has 5 fingers but no thumb? $187 for which coin? For that money I'd certainly expect a coin with obverse legend and the officina letter following the mintmark. On my poor quality ($7 in 2011) 4 finger Heraclea coin, the E officina is spaced a bit farther from the SMH but I don't have a good explanation of where it went on this coin.

A plea for your consideration: Be patient when shopping. When you pay $187 for a coin worth $25 (being generous) you encourage sellers to shoot for the moon and see if someone pays the price. After all you can buy 100 coins and sell all for a reasonable markup or buy the same coins and mark them up 500% to see which handful sells and makes you the same profit. If you are going to pay special prices, get special coins.

Oh, I definitely would not pay $187 for it based on what I know. The research would be looking into precisely how unusual it is and what the actual retail value would be. But I think I am going to need new wheel bearings soon, so that one is out anyway. I am stingy by nature, any overpaying I do will be after shopping around and learning more. I don't let retailers pull my pants down, but for a coin that speaks to me I would be willing to overpay by a modest percentage. But yes, that is a good reminder about patience. I definitely make impulsive decisions. Sigh, if I hadn't bought that stupid painting I could buy nice coins. Well, not stupid, it is freakin awesome!!

Negative, it is three layers of sheet metal spaced apart to give it a mildly 3d appearance. The fist follows you around the room.
