The Mint had over the years periodically melted "excess" silver and gold coins with no record of what was being melted as far as dates and what Mint had originally struck them. They were melting coins up into the early 1960's. And then there was the big silver melt in the early 1980's when the Hunt Brothers tried to corner the market on silver. A lot of the late 50's to 1964 silver was melted and so those mintage figures are basically not relevant anymore.
