Hello all,

New member and about to make my first purchase of a coin... ever...

I have the opportunity to purchase a 1898 $20 coin which I gather goes by the name of "Double Eagle"

The coin has been circulated but is in very good condition. I would be purchasing it from a jeweler.

Some concerns I have are as follows:

Weight is 31.9g. I gather that this coin should be around 34g. Is such a difference in weight normal or is it a concern?

The size is 36mm which, again, does not seem to match. However, I will have to measure it again because this measurement was done on a normal tape meter rather than with a caliber.

Other than the above, what else should I be looking out for?

Thank you for any help you may provide.

It would help if you posted a picture of the coin. It seems unusual though.

Many counterfeits were made in Lebanon during the 1960's and 1970's. Weight and size should be very close to exact on a genuine coin. Sounds like you might want to avoid this one the jeweler has. It might be gold, but not one made by the U.S. Mint.

That's interesting. I live in Jordan and Lebanon is only about 150Km away.

I'll weigh the coin on a different electronic scale and I'll measure it again with a caliber. Nonetheless, it seems to me to be too much of a coincidence that many counterfeits should come from Lebanon.

Many thanks for both your inputs.

If the weight is accurate, it sounds very low. These coins should have a weight of 33.436g with a tolerance of 0.032g. A double eagle with that weight would be very worn. Like IGE said, watch out for counterfeits.
