I think perhaps all gold ancients are out of my price range... but I am curious to know if any are actually affordable or recomended.
There will always be some with deeper pockets than me so if you wish to show off your gold ancient coins post some pictures here and tell us how you justified spending the money!
I am sure some of these coins are beautiful and of course gold does not corrode so some will be well kept, the trouble is for 1 gold coin you can own 10 silver ones... so surely it needed to be special to seduce you!
Maybe this will be vulgar (a word a recently found out comes from the latin vulgare meaning Bulgarian!) but lets see some of those gold coins please! (and an idea of price too, either the range or what you paid)

I don't think there is much that is affordable in ancient gold coins unless you would want a coin smaller than anything. The only gold coin that I have ever seen in any good grade sold for about $10K. Might be different in other areas though.....

Yeah, way above my budget but I reckon someone on this forums will have something to show us. On Vcoins ancient gold coins can be had for $800 so I am sure we have collectors on here who can afford such things.
Also as I have learned someone always has something awesome to show :)

You could get a lot more than 10 silvers for 1 gold!

I haven't looked in some time, but not long ago you could still pick up late Roman and Byzantine gold coins starting as low as around $400. But, like I said, I haven't looked lately.

Yeah so I am not being naive to think that some of the forum members will have something to show...
OK 10-1 was the exchange rate back in ancient Greece perhaps and you are right to correct me... but you understand what I am saying; given the choice between buying many silver coin or having one gold coin I think most would buy the silver ones as they offer greater collection value but advanced collectors who have a good deal of silver might want something special in their collection and purchase a few gold ones if their budget allows.
So those that have should step forwards and show us their prized pieces of gold and explain why they decided that it was a worthwhile purchase or what about it seduced them.

I think that gold coins are for rich people - numismatists dont seem to have them outside of museum collections..

Byzantine gold can still be had at fair prices, but you have to be very careful because there are a lot of fakes coming out of Eastern Europe. Some of these are so good, even made from real gold but still fake. Unless you have very deep pockets your best bet is to stick to base metal and silver coins.

I don't disagree, I just want to see and learn... and if someone is prepared to spend large money on such things I am sure they will be interesting to look at and admire.
Nobody has posted one yet but I just know in my guts that someone on here will have a couple...I have looked at a few on Vcoins but I want to hear the story of why they chose their particular coins and what they liked about them.

You won't find ancient Greek, Roman, Celtic or Indian gold coins selling for anywhere near their bullion value; they're all way outside the price range I'm comfortable paying for a single coin. Byzantine and early Islamic gold can be found for much closer to bullion value, but I don't have any of those, either. My oldest gold coin is from one of the pre-Islamic Indian dynasties.
