I'm seeing the term "Boxes" being tossed around in the rolls forum but I am not sure what that means.

I am assuming that the coins come in large numbers of rolls all inside one box? Is that right?

I thought I saw pennies sold in what looked like boxes with holes on top so I am assuming that was a penny box.

If I am right then can I have some commentary on how to get/what to expect from the bank?

Like ok my bank seems to only deal locally with other people's rolls so I am assuming I would have to order this. Whats the technical terminology I need to use? (My other post with humours showed the massive failure me and the woman had negotiating my first getting of customer rolls.)

How much of an 'irritation' is it for them to order it? I obviosly dont want to cause problems at my favorite branch and have to deal with them later for normal things.

Do they call you when its in? Do you come back at a certain time? Is that different by bank?

Any other comments for this first time boxer would be nice. I could see myself going through rather large numbers of coins if its as easy as it sounds and its not too much trouble for them. I could even find several more branches within driving distance and do different kinds of swaps so I am not getting too much from one or weighing one down too much with too many turn ins.

Thanks!

Hey there,

All coins come in boxes of a set amount, much like bills get stacked into a set amount.

Pennies: $25
Nickels: $100
Dimes: $250
Quarters and Halves: $500

It should be no problem to get a box of anything except halves. Just walk in and ask. At most you should get an eye roll if they have to dip into their vault or another teller's drawer. If you get a cranky teller or a crabby manager, just go to another bank. For every bank you find that isn't helpful, there is one that will help.

Now... once you are done searching and are ready for a dump, that is another story.

Halves are a little different. I will let others give their experience as I have yet to get a box of halves.

I don't usually ask for boxes from the vault. The bank needs their own supply and I don't want to short them, so I place an order for x amount. They will receive the order usually within a week or less. Just say, "I'd like to place an order for coin in x amount." Either they will order, or they won't. Sometimes they will call to let you know when the order comes in, sometimes if you delay they will sell the box to someone else, we call this "poaching'"

Well hopefully my bank will be helpful. They have a HUGE sign behind the counter like, as tall as the wall saying courtesy is their number one policy. I hope thats not above math and economics. :D

I could see myself doing boxes. Maybe not quarters but the others are a possability. Though if I'm not repeating the bank I could go in for 100$s in quarters and thats not too bad.

Thanks for clarifying all this.

EVERY bank is different, so dont be afraid to just ask with whatever questions you have. Worst that can happen is they say no

Oh, and if you are sorting pennies for copper, check through the holes to see if it is just a box of new pennies before you lug it home. I've never put an order in, just taken what they can give me, but if you ordered the box, you probably should just take it and go. Who knows? Maybe you'll end up with a box of 2009 uncirculated, and then you could sell them on ebay.

I have one teller that is a huge ***** all the time to me she is older but always gives me dirty looks and refuses to help me but the other tellers are cool when I go in we guess the amount that will come up on the change counting machine and if or which bag will be full. It just depends on who they are, just to spite her I talk to her and smile just to see the fire in her eyes. hahaha

Yah, id probablyi take the box home atleast the first time to check it out. I still have to find a way to return em. I think I have a branch of my bank that I can use just for returning. The funny thing is I've considered trying to find another bank company to open a checking with and then use it as a kind of cute savings plan. Only turn in coins there and never take anything out and see how much I can save up hehe. Be kinda cool to have a 1000 dollars in there and go hey that was all quarters or less lol. :D O I could take it out and say hey I paid for my next computer with pocket change! (ok I cheated lol)

As for the teller thats a pain. Kill em with kindness eh? There is a biblical reference which I dont wanna get into the debate of but has a funny application in this situation: "Be kind to your enemies for it is like heaping hot coals on their head."

Kinda funny when your dong the right thing and being kind and considerate and helpful and friendly and you can see its driving them insane because they just WANT to hate you so bad but they cant find the excuse. :P
