After 10 years of faithful service my Mr. Coffee coffee maker went on the blink this morning. And I immediately lapsed into a trembling hysteria about counterfeits from China. Was it a 1875CC Morgan from the Shanghi back alley mint that we had a good time with in here? How we kept asking don't they even have Red Book over there? Maybe they do but not for the reasons we think. Maybe they're using it to produce comical looking fakes. Knowing that it might be easier to sell those for the humor value rather than trying to convince Joe Sixpack that they're real. Maybe it is they who are laughing at us. "Ooooh..you dumb Yankee, paper tiger, running dog."
Does it really make sense that they wouldn't have a Red Book? It's not like it's a hard thing to find on the Internet.

Oh Yeah, I went down to Publix tonight to get a new coffee maker. They have whole top row lined with appliances. There was only one appliance they weren't selling in a store that sells about 20 tons of coffee a week....
Rest in Peace

L9, I'm certain they have millions and millions of Red Books in China. In fact, they were quite popular here in the US back in the 60s when the counter-culturists thought it was camp to have one. I'm sure Chairman Mao's Little Red Book is available on ebay...

I'm still trying to make the mental transition from a broken Mr. Coffee machine to 75-CC Morgans.

And yes, I'm sure the Chinese "artists" are laughing their butts off at the gullible Yankees who keep buying their artwork. If they really wanted to clean up, they'd invite the US to station a few hundred thousand troops in China. Soldiers are suckers for fancy fake stuff. Also, I'm sure that the Chinese have taken heed of the lessons given by PT Barnum, Franklin, and Darwin and know exactly what they're doing.

And if I read correctly, you still don't have a coffee pot?

If this topic has anything to do with whether or not they have a RedBook to reference in the counterfeit market, I would only question why they would need one? Maybe for mintage numbers, but they sure don't care how exact their science is for the bulk of their money. I think they make loads of money on people that just don't know better. I also think that as technology increases, so will their attention to detail. Sometimes makes me wonder if they're not on the TPG's payroll.....

The Mr. Coffee pot going on the blink was a reference to caffeine withdrawal or the affects of caffeine withdrawal. The Red Book that Fred is referring to is Mao's "Little Red Book" or "How I found happiness on a tablespoon of rice per day." They should probably bring those back now since the affect--if not the real object--of globalism is manorilism.

As for the RedBook for coins I was thinking that they do have them and do use them. But not to avoid mistakes but to make them. If they are not good enough to produce fakes that can pass as real then maybe they are intentionally producing comedy fakes. Americans will pay big bucks for a good laugh. As should be obvious by the pay checks politicians and "corporate talent" get. They just can't get too obvious with the humor. Anna Williams on the obverse of a Morgan with a porcupine haircut and distributed through Wal-mart might be over doing it. Unless of course it was slabbed and signed by Kim Jong lll.

And thanks for the clarification L9. I guess I was reading things a little too literally...
