I keep telling my wife a "couple" can mean three, but she's not buying it.

Well.... I told my wife I only had a handful of something recently (vintage mayan weavings), and she discovered a 'handful' was about 700. That ended up being a fairly expensive evening out. I spent about USD$28 for us and the kids. Normally, dinner costs about 30-50 cents if I eat at home, and maybe a buck and a half or two bucks if I eat out.

My thoughts exactly. That 1804 looks as if it was in the ground a while. I like it.

I don't think the 1834 is cleaned. There are a lot of 1834/35 Half Cents out there in high grade, with mint red, from an old hoard. Are there other signs of cleaning on this coin that someone could point out?

There are some half and large cents with the original mint red but every one that I can recall seeing were all uncirculated and usually with a grade of MS-63 or higher. All of the original circulated half and large cents that I can recall seeing were completely brown. There may be a circulated half or large cent out there that has some original red but it's not very likely. If there is one, it will probably be a high AU with only a small amount. The 1834 Half Cent has a color that looks unnatural to me and doesn't have the reddish orange color that I often see on RB and RD copper. The reverse is slightly splotchy. Other than that and the color, I don't really see any other signs of cleaning. For me, it was the color that indicated cleaning.
