Hi everyone, true story: I found this on the ground outside of a coin show. Although it is unfortunate that someone lost this back in 2004, it was neat to find something this old. However, it is very scratched over the date. Any guesses as to how this coin might be graded and valued given the intentional old vandalism? Thanks!

Unfortunately not. From what I can see, it would come back as a Good Details Damaged Obverse.

for TPG. Somewhere between G-4 and VG-8 is what I think it would grade

nscoinkid1997- Thanks for the input. I did not mean can it be graded as in sent off to a third party grader; rather, if it could be assigned a details grade. Do you think that it has lost just about all collectable value?

Also, it still has collectable value!

I would be thrilled to find an almost 200 year old coin! Great find! IMHO it still has collector value; although maybe only half of G value with the damage.

Thanks, everyone! I'm glad to hear that is is worth something. hmm, my Krause says that the 1816 is worth about $30 in G. Could it really be worth $15 with the scratches, or is $5-10 more realistic?

What would be someone's motivation to scratch the date out on this coin?

philadelphian- honestly, just someone who was being a jerk and wanted to vandalize a coin. Is it just me or are large cents the most commonly seen intentionally damaged US coins? But due to the patina of the coin, it is obvious that the scratches happened long, long ago.

Ya, I'd say VG-8 tops, it's really too bad someone scratched the date. Do you think it was sold scratched like that from the show? Wow, I really love these old cents, its still a great find! And you definitely can't go wrong for free! The person that dropped it was probably a bit upset huh? So you found it in '04? I thought you meant you just found it. I was going to say these were popping up all overture place lately and I definitely believe its a true story because as unbelievable as it is I just found this one 2 days ago with my metal detector (first detector find ) packed under 5+ inches of hard soil. This ones definitely the small date variety for the year and I think would grade EF-45 to AU-50. (The pics are horrible, it definitely looks better in person, colors off in the pic and it looks porous, and it's not...) Do you guys think it would be worth sending mine in for grading in this condition? Id be curious to see how they grade it... Any guesses on a possible value? Just out of curiosity...

Awesome metal detector find! That really is amazing. However, the verdigris might cause it to get a details grade only.
