If the ebay listing is not your coin, please accept my apology on the above reply. It is odd that the coin you have is also listed on ebay with some of the replies here. New members with a lack of numismatic knowledge that join this forum should understand that many of us that reply have many years in this hobby, and most are well educated in the areas we specialize in. Everyone here are more than happy to offer help to someone interested in numismatics. If you check out the replies after Drsandman2 found it listed on ebay, and honestly believed it to be the same coin (as we all did), you can then understand our reason for posting what we did. If you follow the advice and have it Certified, it would only be fair to post the results on this forum so we can give credit to those who knew the pattern type...

Would the timing of this ebay listing suggest that the variety attribution came from this very thread?

I just spent the last ten minutes comparing both 1958 cents at a zoom level of 200% and believe both coins are THE SAME COIN... I say this as on the obverse rim from the 2 to 4 O'clock position you will see a raised finned edge, also both coins have the same toning detail just north-west of "LIBERTY". On the reverse is some pitting south-west of the "C" in Cent, plus green residue at the same exact locations of the ribbon... The pitting can be in the coin die itself, but the green residue !!! What are the odds?

Broken_Coin is right, pics are of the same exact coin. That is why I suggested that the OP posted it on ebay. It popped up immediately after my post as a 5 day auction, and is most obviously the same exact coin. However, the photos are at different focus and have different backgrounds. DoubleEagle - Yes, I'm relatively certain that is genuine. I have the Snow guides, and spent a lot of time comparing OP's coin to the 4 known die pairings. In fact, although there were only around 300 strikes, they can vary. Several were Struck Through Grease, making them initially to appear as different dies. After looking at the other auctions by the same seller, something is VERY fishy. For instance, an 1870 Pattern half dollar, toned and BU (this coin slabbed can bring an easy $12,000). And an 1829 monster toned Half Dime. 1887-S BU dime. None of these are in slabs and the seller has zero feedback. All coins match background used to photo OP's coin. http://www.ebay.com/sch/chamblee56/...047675.l2562I'm not one to jump to conclusions, but I have a real bad feeling these could have been stolen. Wonder if any TPGs have these coins photographed on file. (Ironically, the seller is also selling a woman's purse)

It is extremely suspicious that the ebay seller also has listings for hoodies and a trench coat. Someone may want to alert ebay given the rarity of those coins, the obscurity of the seller, and the other items listed I think there is enough circumstantial evidence that the coins are stolen to warrant freezing the auctions and launching an investigation.

Say a buyer bids $1000 and pays via bank deposit. The seller takes the money and runs, buyer never gets the coin. Its less likely the buyer would get fleeced if they used paypal because of buyer protection but even thats not fool proof.

Alright, I spent some time with ebay trying to explain all of this. I gave them the seller's ID, rum_n_cola's ID, and directed them step-by-step to this thread. I also wrote it all down, and submitted this info via the reporting form we use here at CC. They are investigating the matter. I thought it was also kinda fishy that rum_n_cola has a Tiffany engagement ring for sale, new in box at $2,100. Very atypical item to sale for those who are not jewelry dealers. I like to think the best of people, so I apologize to rum_n_cola if you have been victimized by the stolen photograph of your coin.

I am highly upset. I think what this person did was follow this thread until they got enough info to post the coin. If you google "1858 Indian cent", the forth listing down is this forum discussing my coin. I spoke with my father and he told me that he never sent any photos out with a red background. His were on a white piece of print paper. I am wandering if the person selling on ebay somehow Photoshopped the background of my photo from here and played around with it to avoid detection? This person is definitely trying to defraud someone. I live near Tampa, FL. This person is claiming to be from Atlanta, GA. If you all search ebay for Rum_N_Cola you will find my user ID, which is the exact user ID that I use on here and on proxibid. I have reported this person to ebay! I understand how everyone came to the conclusion, this is just too odd. I have been scammed on ebay before and learned a valuable lesson. A few years back I purchased a Rolex watch for $5,000 which should have been my first warning since the watch retailed for over double that price. I paid using debit card in PayPal. The payment cleared and the person sent me the package via Priority Mail with signature confirmation. When the package arrived it was half a brick and no watch. I contacted ebay and PayPal. After a nearly 2 month investigation I was notified that the seller had stolen an ebay account with many positive 100% feedback and had hacked into someones PayPal account and linked the two together, changed the address and bank info. They simply made the fake watch listing, received payment and moved it to their bank account and closed the PayPal and bank account(which was opened under a fake name, etc) and sent me a brick in the mail and they just fell off the face of the Earth. Person at ebay told me it happens all the time.

Here is a Morgan dollar scam that I find all the time on ebay. Notice how the seller goes out of the way to state that he is a US seller and how he is rushing the buyer to make payment. He wants to get as much money in and out of their PayPal account before ebay catches on and closes the auctions. See the total 100% scam auction that is live as of this post here on ebay... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Amazing-188...em2574fea440

DRSANDMAN2: The Tiffany & Co engagement ring is my ring that was for a woman though it ended up not working out. I invested lots of money into it and have listed the ring numerous times, though second hand jewelry market is tricky. I am not sure it will even sell at $2100 which is a fraction of retail. I have sold many jewelery items over the years if you look through my feedback, including one antique ring that I inherited from my late grandmother that sold for well over $5,000 and would have retailed for well over $20,000. I am a trusted seller on ebay and have been for years.

I can't get around the fact that they have a photo of your EXACT coin. Given the different focus angles and depth, I don't see how they could have photoshopped the pictures you posted here. And I have been using photoshop since 1997.
I'm sorry it didn't work out. Why didn't you take it back to the store?
This thread stinks, I'm going to spend the rest of the day outside.
