Appears someone bought a problem coin in a slab and cracked it out, then concealed the problem.
Compare the spots of verdigris around the ribbon ends.

I should have phrased that differently. What I mean is "chose not to disclose the problem" Re: burnishing.

I can't get around the fact that chamblee posted his auction immediately after I provided info regarding this pattern to rum_n_cola via this thread. Just another coincidence I suppose.

He'd been specifically pointed to this thread. Registration isn't instantaneous; we hand-approve all new members. So we knew he was coming before you did.

Appears that D0ubl3Eagle gets the kudos for picking up on the burnished reverse, from the first pics!

Heritage should check with the original buyer to see if the coin has been lost or stolen

I don't think it was lost or stolen. We have outed several sellers here before that buy slabbed *problem* coins at big auction houses then crack them out and sell them on ebay without mentioning the problems. Heck, one of them pretty much does it for a living.

scubu, you are right. I didn't know this was happening. It is dishonest and akin to thievery. It's worse than used car salesmen selling known lemons. Typically, lemons can be fixed. Heritage, ebay, and Paypal should have the ability to identify these people and at least blacklist them via name, address, SS number, etc.

Very interesting - perhaps all those auction listings were problem coins broken out of slabs. The practice is a bit unethical but honestly anyone buying a conditional rarity on ebay that is not in a slab should assume it has some severe issues

Yeah If you're buying a raw coin you're gambling and you have to accept some reponsibility.

In this case, it was not only cracked out, but apparently some verdigris was removed, perhaps even dipped. I say this solely from what is visible on the reverse of the two photos.

OK. This will be my last attempt to reach out to both parties involved here, before we take action to protect our community. I will post this identical statement in both of the currently-active threads. Evidence has been shown which tends to indict both of you for one reason or another. If it is in your interest to defend yourself, reach out to me offline. With any unseemly evidence at all, you don't stand a chance of clearing your name in public. If we do this right, I can keep that from happening.

You can email me care of coincommunity.com. My address here is my username, subtracting the extra "S" and "D" I have in it.

If neither of you contact me by this time tomorrow, I am going to shut this all down with prejudice.

Ugh, I think I need a shower after reading this thread and the one about the 1877 IHC So now it appears that we have two people with images of exact same coins with one person stealing pictures in what is most likely an attempt at fraud and the other person who is cracking out problem coins, doctoring them, and attempting to sell them as problem-free coins- another fraudulent act. I don't really care who is who at this point, both of them are dirrrty
