Got this 1823 Bust Half Dollar through the YN Auction at the World's Fair of Money in Philly. Any of you who are members of the ANA or read the Numismatist will recognize this coin from the January 2012 column of "Past Tense" by Rod Gillis. I just wanted to find out everyones opinion on the grade, if the variety would be the "Ugly 3" variety and if it would be a good idea to get graded and with which TPG.

Based on the obverse only it does appear to be the O-110a "Ugly 3". It would help if you could show the reverse also. As to the grade I would say VG-10 to F-12 - possibly details.

Note the diagonal line running from the right side of the I down through the bust. Could this have been from something like tape?

I can offer no guidance on TPGs as I own no slabbed coins and have no intention of submitting any in the future.

I was wondering about that line myself. It looks for all the world like a raised feature, with wear and toning along its length corresponding to the features of the bust, like some kind of die break!

with Jeffrose; this 1823 CBH appears to be an Overton-110a, known as the "Ugly 3".

Some diagnostics for Ugly 3 1823 O-110a, R3.

Obverse: Star 1 points to lower half of a dentil. "3" has been crudely repunched at its center.

Reverse: Die dot between stripes 1 and 2 near top. Base of "A" is above base of "M". "A" almost touches upper arrowhead. Left sides of "I" and "T" are in line.

I would grade this coin at F15, possibly even up to VF20 but the long diagonal scratch on the obverse would definitely bring this grade down. Probably net F12.
