I paid $100, I see the scratches on the front. I'm new to coin collecting, wish I found this site yesterday.

Welcome to Coin Community, bdbill.

I don't believe you're needing to regret this purchase. The scratches on the obverse are not, to me, indicative of a deliberate cleaning. There's too few of them, and nothing remains in the nooks and crannies to betray the cleaning. Furthermore, I think you're going to find those scratches to be far less apparent to the eye; digital photography tend to highlight such things to the unfair detriment of the coin.

And that's not even the good news.

I don't believe this coin has seen circulation. The very first place one studies to see wear on these is the tips of the wings, and I see no wear there. The next place is the frontmost part of the hair, where I see a certain flatness of strike, but again no wear.

This was the first year of issue for this coin. Like most first years, one can expect a disproportionate number of them to have been saved in Mint State. I think this is one of them. Even if you were to have it professionally graded and receive a Details grade because of the scratches - third-party graders (TPG's) will slab cleaned and damaged coins with what's called a "details" grade - you're still looking at a hefty profit.

Like I said, welcome to Coin Community.

Hello, bdbill, and welcome to our little family.

First of all, get rid of the notion that you messed up badly. Perhaps you could have made a better choice, but that is only one of MANY things that you will learn by reading the many contributions of our members and by asking questions.

Are you familiar with the term "Greysheet?" It is widely
used by dealers to judge the market. The August 10, 2012 issue lists the 1892 quarter in AU as:
bid: $95 ask: $105.
By way of comparison, a BU is listed as
bid $155 ask: $170.

Assuming a 20 per cent markup, the retail price of the AU
would be $126.

Now we come to negotiations. The scratch, as you call it,
might make a dealer come down in price. I personally would call it an abrasion. It is NOT on the face, and that makes it less a screw up than if it were. I can see five abrasions on the neck, but they are really not distracting.

I would suggest that you follow other ebay listings.
(I had one in mind, but could not successfully copy the link.)

Your seller appears to offer a 30 day guarantee. If possible, please submit a photo or a scan once you have received the coin.

Two questions:
Were there any other bidders?
Where are you located?

No doubt the members can advise you of upcoming coin shows in your area. Always a great opportunity to learn.

Do not feel badly! Feel happy to be here!! And NO!
You did NOT screw up badly.

Oh Ddave, I also do not believe it was cleaned.
I can envision, at a bank, this coin sliding across an oak counter.
Picking up a few abrasions along the way.
The recipient, noticing that it was "different," kept it.
And kept it WELL!
The reverse is wonderful.
The price was not out of line.
Do you feel better now, bdbill?

No other bidders, it was a "Buy it now" for $125 or make an offer, which I offered the $100. I live close to Madison, WI.

bdbill. I see no reason you should regret this purchase. The real test will be when you get it in hand. If you like it at first glimpse, you likely always will. If the scratch turns you off at first it always will. Don't wait for the coin to grow on you. Throw it back and find another.

ndbill to CoinCommunity. Like others have already mentioned, I don't think you need to regret this purchase at all, looks like a nice coin, for a good price.

the image is a scan. based on my experience with scans in this exact parallel you will wind up with a very lustrous coin in what should be BU with the only compromise being the abrasion across the obverse. For $100 you did very well and you'll truly realize that when its in hand. this one should shimmy under the light like a tin can on a Caribbean beach

if your going to type collect and fill a 7070 this is a prime example to have IMO. If your in it for profit and resale, your probably at a breakeven. Stray from the latter unless you plan on becoming a dealer of sorts and if so, study and scour the WWW for optimal deals. Just collect, enjoy, learn and make sure you take advantage of the best people on the planet that are here to help you gain that education and that's the fine folks here at the CCF

Well, it ended at $280, really nice toning. I'm happy with the one I bought, I was worried it was cleaned, but it seems like most agree it wasn't. Thanks again everyone!
