I've been trying to attribute this 1847 large cent without much luck. Details are XF, but it has a fair amount of corrosion, so many of the identifying features are hidden. The 1 is very far to the left so I think it could only be 26, 35, 36, 37, 38 or 42. The 1 does not touch the bust, so unless it's a late die sate of the others, I'm thinking N42. Is it possible that this is a proof that somehow fell into circulation?

It looks like a business strike to me. The strike does not look sharp enough. The stars are lacking in detail and it doesn't look like it was there to begin with. The rims appear rounded and not square off. Not sure which of the die pairs it could be. Grade looks about right.

I don't think I could give the second reference number a 6, I'm thinking more like a 7 and I would lean more toward N-35 or 38.

Hi Conder

I compared it to 35 and 38 and the only thing keeping me from choosing one is that the 1 seems thinner on my coin than on those. I compared it to another coin I have that is a 35 and it doesn't quite match. The only reason I knew the other was a 35 was that it had the characteristic lines behind the curls.
