A while ago my Grandma showed me a small collection of coins that had belonged to my Grandpa. He had got most of them from his dad who found most of them on a farm he bought. There were about 7 large pennies, a silver dollar, an american Indian Head cent, and a few other things.

Most of the coins were common dates, but one of the large pennies was an 1858 (I don't know what variety). Unfortunately it was in the roughest shape of all of the large cents. I don't think its even gradeable. I was wondering if a key date coin in this condition has much value. It is not mine, is not for sale and likely won't ever be sold as it has been in the family for years and has sentimental value. I

Sorry about the pictures as I didn't have a camera with me so they were taken on a cell phone. They do make it look worse than it really is (the date is easy to read with the coin in hand) but it is not in good shape. I live over 6 hours away from my grandma so I can't take better ones right now.

Since it is in such rough shape still doesn't take away the value of the coin. Because of the fact that the 1858 is such a key date and I would grade this an AG-3, it would be worth about $30-$45.

The NGC World Price Guide has the values or the Charlton Guide to Canadian Coins but unfortunately, they only go down to G-4.

Try soaking it in acetone.
