The coin was damaged after it left the mint.

Hey,I find crappy stuff all time.But Also find good stuff too.I had a whole 50$ bag of pennies and dident find one good one in there.So there was 5000 pennies.Just bought a other 50$ bag and 30$ worth of costumer rolled coins from the bank .Bingo ,I found a few nice ones.Including my double traildie penny I got posted on here.So keep searching ...you will find good once.

PMD, but I think that in this case, may have been accidental.

The flattened rim and peripheral devices are the biggest clues for damage and I think you will find that the coin is slightly out-of-round on that side as well, another indicator of damage.
