I like the 1986 Liberty piece personally, commemorative series perhaps....

You guys have heard me harp on their value before, so to make sure I have a little insurance to move with the big 25 oz. Gateway bar I posted about, I have this set I got real close to melt....

It will sell close to melt later, not gonna get rich, may finagle a way to keep this one, I enjoy the image of the lady liberty up close....

The Statue is now green of course, as the bronze has colored and weathered in time. But they say the Colossus of Rhodes (one of the seven ancient wonders of the world) never lost its bronze luster....

It only survived fifty two years if memory serves me right, as it snapped off at the knees during an earthquake....

I admire ancient engineering feats, such as it would have taken an entire ox cart full of stone every two or three minutes day and night for seven years straight, to provide enough building material to complete the Roman coliseum....

Our lady Liberty embodies the Colossus and most since it, and most civilizations feel it is important to have a large statue like this to represent their beliefs and culture....

Best-Modern-Day-Gold-Pieces-Closest-To-Spot....

The Ellis Island comm silver dollar in these sets and the non silver half dollar are like a free bonus the way I see it, nice little case sets....

The commemorative gold coins are probably the most undervalued in terms of the gold series. I love the look of most of them and they do seem to have lower premiums for the most part. Definitely an under appreciated series for gold stackers

Last year I was forced to sell many modern gold commemoratives. At the multiple coin shows I went to many dealers were not interested or offered 90% of spot based off the actual gold weight. The 1/2 ounce spouse coins were easy enough but the $5 and $10 were tough.

The Collosus snapped off at the knee's after about 50 years and the oracle told that it would aggitate the gods if it was rebuilt so it laid where it fell for a further 800 years or so. People would still come to see it though and would try to put their arms around the thumb...

Then an Egyptian came with a large number of camels and took it away to sell for scrap.

I have this gold coin and it regularly comes out for inspection, I too love its design. At some stage I will probably get the silver coins to complete the set but I haven't got around to that yet.

I disagree that they are not easy to sell...if they are only worth bullion then spot price minus 1% is always available any hour of the working week.

Let me suggest the standard St George and the Dragon Soveriegn, it must be one of the best gold pieces available for close to spot.

Why go for modern gold when there some really nice common date half eagles that can be had for not much above melt? Same with sovereigns.

I DO have some NCLT, but much.

Just FYI....Lady Liberty's outside is made of pure copper...not bronze.

Heck -- if you want to buy some modern gold coins near melt, why not go for some Krugerrands or Mexican Gold 50 Pesos?

Good call Unholyroller, I don't know why I often confuse copper and bronze....

If it were made of bronze, just image the spot price tag, lol....

"Let me suggest the standard St George and the Dragon Sovereign, it must be one of the best gold pieces available for close to spot."

Thanks UK Dave, I agree completely, as I have had some half sovs, love that design and price tag....

Great additional info as well UK Dave, I could so see the Greeks of the time thinking the Gods struck that big guy down at the knees, and maybe they did, lol....

True Barry, I just like this particular piece, I will indeed keep the Krugers an peso in mind in the future....

Absolutely, Barry. The Mexican 50 Peso coins have about the lowest premium out there. Added to that, they are BIG beautiful coins. I would not mind having some of these but at $2000+ a pop, they are a little spendy, even if the premium is low.

Hawk, I've tired of paying big premiums for pure bullion coins. But want to add gold so much that I cannot resist buying these kind of coins. When gold reaches $10k an ounce I'll sell these LOL
