How safe would you think it would be to hold gold if the government came out and said we need more Roosevelt type of policies to help us turn around the economy.
I know it sounds crazy but if it happened would it make you hold less gold?
After all He was the only president to confiscate gold.

It would be quite safe IF it was well hidden. Many people in 1933 refused to turn in their gold. Roosevelt's move was to get the gold from the banks because they had most of the gold and were concentrated store-houses of gold. That was reasonable because gold was money in those days, so money WAS in the banks then. I don't think that there was ever a case wherein government agents went to someone's house and demanded that they turn over their gold. There were a few cases wherein gold held in safety deposit boxes was confiscated because government agents were in the bank because it folded and they inventoried everything inside the bank including the SDBs. An interesting side note is that Roosevelt telegraphed his move on gold by about a month. The notice of confiscation was issued and made public about 30 days before the order was to take effect. This meant that all of the rich people who had a lot of gold were able to move their gold to Europe, Canada, and Mexico to protect it from the coming gold grab. I predict a rash of "boating accidents" wherein much gold and silver was "lost", if the government decides to steal confiscate privately held PMs any time in the future. My bottom line on this is that, yes, PM confiscation is possible but not especially likely because there just isn't enough wealth held in gold and silver these days to be worth the effort. A FAR more tempting target is retirement fund money. If the government were to require all retirement funds be held in "ultra safe and secure" government bonds, for example, over $6T dollars could be grabbed from private hands. Now, THAT is wealth on a scale that the government would find very interesting. I have read that other countries have done this, so it's apparently not an unknown government action.

I find it ironic that in 1997 the US made a commemorative gold coin for Roosevelt.

Obviously all gold held by citizens should be confiscated because the terrorists will get their greezy hands on them. I find it funny that while the USA is exploring Mars, Canada is looking for a lost ship, ironically captained by Sir John /Franklin/ It was trying to charter the northern territorial region of the Canadian Arctic. Could be a foreshadowing of the Mars rover.

Quote: Interesting Ed - they better not touch my nest egg! I can't imagine that the American people would stand for something like this these days. The government would have a riot on their hands. I agree 100%! Them's fightin' words! And I do not care how much flowery speech they wrap it up in... stealing my property nicely is still stealing! [rolls eyes] Yep... and personal firearms too... and, hey, what about all those food hoarders? They will be living large while their neighbors who didn't plan for disaster are starving. Best to divvy all that up, just to be fair.

Those food hoarders make me laugh. anytime a SHTF synerio happens gangs will also arise. Those people are always out of shape and will have no chance of defending them selves. they are asking for a fight.

Isn't that what they told Frodo, and look what happened to his ring.

For some reason everyone thinks a total melt down (SHTF) with zombies coming out of every corner.
It isn't going to happen that way, it will be a economic event similar to what Germany went through after WWI or the great depression.
So yes those that have PM and even a nice supply of food will make it through the hard times and have a better opportunity. You don't have to be in shape to make great decisions and have the right things in an emergency.
If it comes to guns then those that have it and are able to keep it secret again win.
Now when the Zombies come and you have to run the 100 in under 12 seconds I doubt anyone lasts that long.

Yeah, a lot of unprepared people laugh about those who hope for the best but plan for the worst... until the worst happens, of course, and THEN they want to be your very best friend. <rolls eyes> As to defending yourself, your family, and your property... some know how and some do not. It's not as if we have a big sign in our front yard, "Preppers Live Here!", lol. These idiot gangs you mention are some of the worst shots out there. Those of us who are armed, trained, and ready to repel violent people with whatever level of force necessary are not the ones who will be robbed and killed. The Korean shop-keepers in Watts during the LA riots demonstrated that already. While armed thugs were roaming the streets, unmolested by the police who were too afraid to confront them, and burning and looting stores nearby, the Koreans had their people on the roofs of their shops with shotguns and semi-automatic rifles. They did not shoot anyone. They didn't have to. All they has to do was show that they were prepared and refusing to become victims. Guess whose stores were not burned or looted.

Those Koreans are my personal heroes! Good historical comparison, Ed. People become mindless thieves when society collapses, like those people looting shoe stores during the LA riots.... really? Shoes? Don't make me laugh.

Quote: But Zombies have always been traditionally slow. If theyre running 12 sec 100s were all doomed Heh heh... I don't think that I EVER ran a sub-12 sec 100 meter dash. Not even in college when I had the Greek god body going. I was plenty strong and a very good swimmer but running just was not my thing. lol Fortunately, my Mossy 500 is way faster than that, so Zombies beware!
