Can somebody tell me about this 1986 half dollar commemorative? I haven't seen it before and don't know anything about it, is it rare? What's the fair market value for it? I got it packed in with a group of Kennedys I just bought off of ebay, so I'm curious about what I have here.

thanks

Its the statue of liberty clad half dollar. Unfortunately its not rare, I believe about 10 million were minted but they usually sell around 8 or 9 dollars so certainly worth more than a half dollar. Some places will have it listed for 3 or 4 dollars like APMEX but then charge you 10+ in shipping. Without the OGP $5-7 sounds fair

I think its a beautiful coin, one of my favorite modern commemoratives. I probably just over paid for one myself around $13 just because it had a beautiful tone on it and I love nicely toned coins. I forgot that there was only 2 modern commemorative halves that were silver and not clad.

That's one of my favorites, too. Water "works" well on a coin.

Those of us whose grandparents and great-grandparents arrived in this country by way of Ellis Island, the theme of this coin, have a special emotional tie to this half dollar.

It looks like your Statue of Liberty half-dollar is a Proof version of the coin that has seen some "circulation" and received a few bumps and bruises along the way. By "circulation" I mean that it appears to have been removed from its original protective plastic capsule and mixed in with other "raw" coins.

The Mint was authorized to strike up to 25,000,000 of these clad half-dollars, but sold "only" 6.925 million of the Proof coins and 928,000 of the Uncirculated version.

As noted by others, it's a fairly common coin. If I'm correct about the "bruises" on the coin, many collectors would place its value at less than $5.00.

that this is mostly a clad proof that has seen some bag hits as a result of being removed from its original packaging.
