With the bump in silver the past few days I've been keeping an eye on the spread in price between the bullion and uncirculated ATB 5 oz coins. The mint still has these priced at $205 just as they were when silver was $27/oz. Right now the 2012 and 2011 releases are selling for $184 and $189, respectively. At what price spread would you consider getting the collector version rather than the bullion issue? Does anyone know at what silver price the mint will increase the cost for these?

hmm, well at a recent coin show, they were selling graded versions of the acoins for around 185-190 dollars for the coins the us mint sells them for. but no doubt the mint will jack up the price pretty soon. If there was a reason you wanted to buy from the mint for a particular reason, right now is a good time, cause if silver goes up another 50 cents or so, who knows if they increase the price by 40 bucks..?

Not sure the exact price but last time it hit 35 they suspended sales and raised the price. These have been priced for low 30s silver all along but if it hits 35 and doesn't come back down fast I'm sure well see the same thing.
Can remember the exact reprice last time but they did get up to 275ish at one point so it may be a big jump.

Sorry, I'd say to dump your 5oz ATBs if you get the chance. It's easier to buy bouillon in 1 and two oz ingots and they are easier to trade and sell. In my opinion, the whole 5 oz, ATB experience was destroyed by the mint with all the special dealer problems. As an average collector, I won't have anything to do with them. Rather buy the APMEX American bullion. Just my opinion though. I think they'll end up being a real albatross.

Carmykle in terms of stacking silver your right but if collecting to collect they do look fantastic. But the mint really couldnt have handled that series any worse than they have

The coin looks really great, and is a nice way to own 5 oz's of silver if you can get it for the right price.at 185 dollars, the premium is not that high

I don't see any downside whatsoever. Even if they were a complete tank they still have 5 oz of .999 fine silver.

I've picked a couple up for less than 170, and I plan to hang onto them because I like Yellowstone. I'm sure my wife or heirs will sell it off decades from now when silver is over $80 and ounce. :)

That's a tough one for me. After getting fed up with the large price difference between the bullion and "collector's" versions, I basically committed to buying the bullion versions for this year by purchasing a nice wooden display case to hold them. And, just to save on shipping, I actually bought two of the cases, so I'm committed for next year as well...
Seriously, though, I have the complete set from 2011 directly from the mint and, while I admire the "vapor blast" finish, I don't really see that much of difference. They don't even come in a particularly nice box, and I really haven't seen much evidence that collectors care enough about these to drive up the price like, say, proof Silver Eagles. I think I will stick with the bullion versions for now and admire them for what they are -- really nice looking silver bullion...

Some of these coins are very beautiful. I have bought a couple of these coins at around 160 each when silver was cheaper. I always buy bullion version as I am not totally convinces on the numismatic value of the coins. I buy them because I like them.

If Ag holds at $35, the Mint will probably suspend most of the silver offerings, though probably not the silver proof set nor the commemoratives. The last suspension was right at $35/oz. and that was in late March just after the Chickasaw puck was released. All that happened was a suspension period of about 10 days and there was no price adjustment when the coins returned to sale.
