I'm not aware of pieces actually struck in platinum although it would be possible. I do know of double eagles that were split in half and hollowed out than had a disk of platinum inserted and soldered back together.

at 1844 five dollar is given the reference BE.6550-6554.cf.
is BE meaning the breen encyclopedia?

That isn't NGC, that's the American Numismatic Society in New York. And yes BE.6550-6554.cf BE is Breen Encyclopedia catalog numbers 6550-6554 (which are the numbers for all the 1844 half eagles from each of the mints) and the .cf means counterfeit. I'm fairly sure the last number in the title of each references when it was acquired. Year, item number for the month, month.

Well I learned something, I guess they did have platinum counterfeits. I wonder why they aren't better known? You would think the counterfeiter would have made enough of them for them to be promenently mentioned in the literature. After all platinum was an excellent choice for counterfeiting gold coins.

@ conder101: thanks for explaining me the numbersystem. I m not so firm in us-numismatics, its a few miles away from europe.
in france, england and spain (incl. oversea colonies) this counterfeits are very often to find.
of course also in auctions. it the same as like the platinum roubles of russia (1828-1845)

yes, I meant the ANA-website. I only know a few pieces of this countefeited dollars (struck between 1840 and 1880)
and information is very little. may some pieces have been struck for the metcalf or even the king farouk collections in later days, but I think most of them are contemporary counterfeits.
