So I was out in the rural areas around my city the other day and stopped by a few different post offices. All of them had a coin display case but I was quite surprised to find some sold out coins just sitting there. One had a Titanic collector set which sold out months ago.

Got me thinking, will Post office hunting become popular? Is anyone else mining POs? How many sold out coins are sitting in small POs just waiting to be snapped up?

There are roughly 6000 Postal Outlets so it might take awhile to visit them all.

That would sure take quite a while :)
I didn't know that they could have sold out coins at post offices. Then again, I haven't been to a smaller PO in a little, so I wouldn't know.
Next time I ever get near a rural PO I'll stop by, who knows what I'll find!

I've been doing some POH in my neighbourhood lately.

Picked up a Titanic collectors set (plus left one there),
a Niobium wolf
And a 25-cent aster bumblebee (Left two behind).

Tempted to go back for the Aster's.

I'm passing pretty often in a few big POs near my place. The thing is that sometimes there are sold out coins magically appearing o.O A week ago I picked two Two Loons there. Was surprised, because three days earlier they didn't have anything ...

I do that all the time, I work with CP so sometimes I tell my co workers which coins to order and set aside for me in case they become a hit.

Are there semi-recent NCLT (2012 or 2011) that might be worth picking up at retail prices? I know I see stuff, but I'm not totally up on popularity/value of NCLT. Mostly I buy them as art to appreciate rather than as something that might be valuable. I have noticed "old" sets and coins in post offices from time to time, and if there is something great to get, I would love to be able to keep any eye open for it.

@CC, it is a big News if you said you find a Glass Bee.
For the Titanic set, you can easy find some at Toronto.
I know at least 6 POs have them on Display for months, and no one even care to take them.

Discounted 2011, 2012 Santa coin
Different 2011 Gift sets

Peregrine Falcon was on sale for $52 ?

I wouldn't resist :)

well made series, but overpriced. Not long time ago bought Wood Bison with the same discount.
Till now it was the single Wood Bison coin, and nowadays the Wildlife Wood Bison (bullion $5) came out.

now this is interesting. I went into my first post office every yesterday and I saw a number of coins...nothing sold out as far as I can remember though.

what I learned is that they do have a 25% off section which I think is amazing. It was mostly filled with 2011 notable date collector sets (baby, wedding, etc etc) but it also had the ultra high relief royals coins at 25% off.

I'm going to have to go in there monthly and check it out.
