As we are planning our next coin show in June of 2013, we are planning to buy a camera system to record not only those who are signing in at the registration table, but also on the main bourse floor.

We hope that this will deter any would be thieves to at least think twice before applying their trade.

Every year we have at least one or two items get stolen off dealer tables and sometime right in front of the dealers.

Right now, we have a very good security company with uniform and plain clothes members walking the floor and plans to add cameras next year.

I would like to hear back from other show organizers what actions they might have tried to 1) keep the thieves out and 2) make the show more secure.

Thanks....

I am not an organizer, but I have attended some relatively small coin shows. Here are my observations: most of the coins/bills were in display cases that the dealer opened and handed you the coin/bill for closer inspection. It seems the dealer had to be aware of how many items were "in hand" for viewing and be aware of who had them. Bargain bins were simply on table tops with a bit less observation of coins going in or out. I saw one guard at the room entrance, and there may have been others in plain clothes walking the floor. I haven't been aware of any thefts while there, but they may have been kept low-key.

best security is security you dont notice, make up security tags for everyone with a table, then all visitors will think everyone is security, should keep the opportunistic thief away

Cameras have blind spots. The best ones are INSIDE the showcases that take a good snapshot of the faces peering in.

But I find that the higher the security the less I feel trusted. It goes both ways. It really depends on the caliber/quality of your wares, so you have to weigh it out.

Registration table? A neat idea, but what if the thief sneaks in? Might be better to have an admission fee plus a "buyer tag". Anyone without one can be asked where's their tag. Because you have to remember that a criminal doesn't follow rules and wouldn't register. And make sure you shred those registries after the show.

Libertad...we funnel everyone coming to the show to the registration table. No exceptions.... even dealers have to sign in on set up and only the people on their applications are allowed to help set up.

This has, believe it or not, deterred a couple of potential thieves. We have them reregister on both days of the show too. If anyone refuses to sign in, they are walked out by our armed security.
