I was in the UK in May and received both of these coins in change.

The one on the left has a very mushy strike, different colour, and the reeding/pattern on the edge looks like a child did it. That was the biggest give away to me.

I've heard that something awful like 1 in 20 of these are fakes now...

The U.K. seems to be having some real problems with counterfeit coins in circulation.

I was in the UK for just over a week during the Olympics... I gave a police officer one of these with the same look and told him it was counterfeit... He was very happy that atleast one more was now out of circulation!

Yes there are a lot of these in the UK, the bookmakers was offering 4 to 6 that they would scrap the lot and introduce a new design of £1 last year.

They have stopped frieght containers with millions of blanks ready for minting from coming in but there is enough money in counterfieting these that I don't think they will get rid of them all.

The forgers have gotten pretty advanced over the years though, as well as the bad fakes there are some pretty good ones too now... and they have the weight right too so some of them work in vending machines and pool tables.

I personally would like to see them replaced with a bi-metal coin, not only as it is more secure but because then I will have completed my set :)

This is an old thread but your post reminded me of it Gothic Florin, some interesting statements in it even if all the links are not still valid.

Definitely fake - thats a very common fake, as the real ones arent struck very well, making it a hazy line between real and fake.

Ive started pulling fakes from circulation as I see them. Its technically illegal to have them (I assume thats if you have a thousand of the same thing...)

Sadly I don't think shops and banks worry about them these days because of the large number in circulation. They don't like to upset customers by telling them they can't accept them as they're fakes, and causing arguments in the till queues.

I can remember asking a bank teller many years ago what happens when someone hands in a fake £20 note, and they said it was company policy to just take them and not upset the customer. They then went back to a central cash depot where they undoubtedly went back into circulation.
