Interesting coin. I couldn't find a reference for it though. Any silver coin of Caligula isn't going to be cheap even in it's condition I would suspect you would have to pay $300-$400. This is just a guess I have nothing to base it on.

Thanks echizento,
It looks real, found it on Numismall, they want $550, looks beat up, but its the first Caligula AR I have found under $1000...

0, I see a rather high grade coin scraped and damaged in a way that might be done to conceal something. I have not found a fake match for the coin but I would not buy it without knowing more than I do now. As far as price goes, assuming the coin is genuine, I'd rather not have the coin than having one in that condition for which I paid as much that would seem appropriate for the item. I'd rather have a holed one. I have worse coins but they are coins I could not see getting 'bad' as a deception.

I don't know. The coin has been badly damaged. On purpose? Perhaps. The reverse is fairly soft on the details, but this alone doesn't make it a fake. It depends how much they are asking. I found a couple that sold in the past couple of years for large sums. This one, for example sold for 2500 Swiss Franks (about $2450): http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=104716

And was sold at a high end, reputable auction. I found another that was chipped, but with much better detail than the coin you posted that sold for $375: http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=401698

Like Doug, I think I would not buy this coin, but stay in the hunt. As many of you know, I searched for a few years for a suitable silver coin of Caligula and finally got one early this year. I think patience is the key, especially with these hard to find at decent price coins.

BTW, the dealer who has this coin is a very reputable dealer. I would not doubt the authenticity based solely on his reputation. That's not to say they could not make a mistake. But if they do, they will stand behind it.

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to pass, but its real tempting, knowing that they would stand behind it helps a little bit....

I've been looking around the web, and found several coins like the OP coin for sale. Most are selling for $2-4000 with one I found selling for over $7000. Of course they are in better condition, but, I don't know, I think I could get very tempted to make an offer on this coin.

I saw this coin on vcoins and the asking price. Unless someone really wanted a Gortyna drachm, I would probably wait for Caligula coin with better details?

Here is a question or you: If a coin is worth $1000 when you are absolutely positive it is genuine, how much is it worth if you are 50-50 in question that it may not be as it seems? What about one you strongly suspect is bad but can not prove it? My answer is to seek another coin simply because there are more coins out there than I have budget. JW said it depends on price. I'll say there are coins I don't want.... period. I might have a place for a well made fake of the type sold and known 100% fake but when the coin comes with a question, it is less valuable than a certain fake because it lacks the educational value. In the last month I bought two fakes (one known and one surprise) but learned things I found interesting from both. Will anyone send this coin off for a certificate? Should they?

No matter how rare the coin might be, if I have doubts I will not buy it. That's why I stay away from Greek silver coins with my limited knowledge chances are I would end up with a fake.
