Hi, I took a chance on an ebay listing for an 1893 CC Morgan. Based on the pix (the seller did post good clear pictures), I would guesstimate the condition as AG3 to G4. I got it for $98.00.

So I have 2 questions; 1) Did I get a good deal? 2) What are the chances it's not legit?

I would think anyone who would try to sell a counterfeit key date would probably have one in better condition, but is there any way (or reason) someone would alter another MM and/or year to create this "key date" coin?

Moved by Forum Mom from Coin Community Family Topics to Classic US coins forum.

Thanks,
John

If the coin is legitimate, it would be worth about $130-$145. However, there is always the possiblity that it is a fake. That would make it worth the equivilant of junk silver. But hopefully it isn't and you just got an excellent deal.

Do you have any pictures or the completed listing that you can post? That way an expert in the series would be able to possibly say if it is real.

I see no reason to doubt its' authenticity. However, given the condition of the reverse, it's likely this one would grade FR2. That being the case, I'd call the deal "fair for you and the seller."

The coin looks good to me. It appears to be an original coin that I would grade as an AG-3. Great pickup! Just as a reminder, Moe is running the 21 days of carson city coins thread.
