I'm certainly not the expert you're waiting for to chime in, but that thing has a ton of damage on it. Looks like somebody may have tried to conceal as much as possible with a harsh cleaning.

Although I cannot see this item at work, 1838 was the first year of the Seated Liberty quarter, and I believe that is one of the first years of the steam coin press, in which may be a trial strike to obtain the necessary pressure to bring the design up.

"In Mint State, almost all the dates prior to 1853 are extremely difficult to find. There are two reasons for this: First, the weak strikes of this era made many coins look more worn than they actually were; and second..."

of course I appreciate the feedback and thank you for taking the time to read and respond.

It's not so bad IMO hence my having won the auction. I wanted one of these and enjoyed the fact I could get the level of detail in the reverse relief that I did for the price I paid. I would not like this in a problem free G4 or G6 for the same money. I am hoping he used a very high light source which will explain the glossy look. No doubt it was cleaned but not harshly IMO. There are no whizz marks, swirl scratches or any scratches for that matter, just what might be a polish to it.

oih82w8, nice reference material...i am into it...

thank you gents

I just dont see how that couldnt have been cleaned or polished. Just so way youd get the many marks and still be blast white.

That said if you dont mind a cleaned or polished coin you can get them with much better detail for a far cheaper price. For the price you paid thats not a bad deal at all. You could always carry it around and wear it down a little if you wanted to remove the polish and still have a fine looking coin for a fraction of the price

Looks genuine, just damaged by heavy polishing and lots of nicks.

Definitely cleaned and I'd say genuine.
