I bought a very nice looks to be MS grade or high AU grade 1883 V nickel no cents off of ebay last night. At first I was like man that is too good to be true as it was like only $15. But then I checked the price guides (I need to buy a new RedBook mine is like 8 years old but I went online since mine is so outdated) and a high AU to MS grade is only $20-30, I had forgotten the no cents variety was a lot less expensive where as the cents variety type would be around $50 in that same grade.

It was from a reputable US dealer so I felt fine when I bid on it but I thought for sure someone would have sniped or bid me up at the end. Made me feel a little more at ease knowing I wasn't getting that its too good to be true coin.

Yea that is the site I used last night, I really thought I would get bidded up so when I didn't I started to worry I got too good of a deal until I looked up the price on there. Paying $15 off of ebay when FMV is like $20-30 is not bad at all, I did the same for a steel cent I bought paying $3 for a MS grade and the coin would have likely priced in the $2-5 range depending on which grade it got.

When you have been out of collecting for years like I have you totally lose track of market value so its nice to have a reference guide. I normally will steer away from auctions that are too good to be true.

If I'm paying more then a couple of dollars for a coin I'll always double check with Numismedia or another guide to make sure I'm not overpaying for it.
