Hi guys
The picture of the two 1953 nickels are both (SF) shoulder fold, and the nickel on the right is close, but is the nickel on the left classified as close also...?

Definitely looks like a near to me.

The top lobe (lower part of the design) of the leaf is the key visual. With a near it appears much close than the far, as if the leaf is rotated into toward the rim, as well as being closer. It's an easier cue than the right lobe (top left detail) of the leaf.

I find it easier to spot the near/far difference on the date.

Oh, the tail of the 9! That makes it blindly obvious. Thanks DV.

Wow, I sure wish Charlton would do a better job of showing ALL the distinguishing features. That's its raison d'etre.
