Hi All,

This may have already been answered in another thread, but I purchased a coin this weekend and my photography has not been able to capture the cameo contrast on it. The coin was labelled MS63 DMPL, and I have no reason to believe it is less than PL, but am trying to decide if it can really go DMPL. I posted this in the Classic US Coin Grading Section and not many people thought there was any cameo on the coin. The coin has better pop in hand than it does in this picture.

In short, any tips for someone using a Cannon point & shoot to get better cameo contrast and showcase DMPL coins?

This is going to take an angled shot. Prop it vertically or on its' side on a piece of newspaper, so you can show it reflecting the print.

I would use a dark (black) material behind the camera to have the dark (mirrored) fields;

DMPL coins are hard for me also. When I used the P&S now the DMPL fields would really show but with the dSLR they don't look like they have any mirrors at all. I am guessing because the camera is so far away from the coin there is nothing to show reflection on the fields

I shot this morgan with my canon sd1100 for the 12 days thread. I believe at the time I used two halogen desk lamps positioned at about 10 and 2. I have since switched over to jansjos. It seems to me that the lighting angle might be low and you might get better results from a higher lighting angle. If it helps at all, the exif data is there.

I have applied two suggestions from this thread, a dark back drop and shooting at an angle. Some day maybe I will get the lighting right.
