Okay, so, first things first: This seller has been very honest with me (both in the listing and in a query I made) about the state of the coins in this lot, and I, personally, think his price is fair for what I'd be getting--and I'd be getting coins that, as a broke cashier, I normally couldn't touch, much less own. (Let's all pause and have a cheer for an honest seller!) HOWEVER, my mom thinks I'd be getting taken. Here's the lot, and then I'll explain what I'm looking at: http://www.ebay.com/itm/11094831251....m1423.l2648See that 1862 IHC up in the corner? That's the one I was particularly interested in, although having a large cent would be awesome (hence my "can't touch, can't own" comment--I never dreamed of owning one). He sent me a better picture at my request, and if not for the hatchmarking some idiot put on the face (I suspect sandpaper or steel wool), I would grade it AU. The letters in LIBERTY aren't just still there--they're all sharp. The feathers are all still there and there are even lines in the hair, which is new news to me--I had no idea the IHC had hair detail. And then, you get to that ugly hatching on the face that kind of breaks my heart all over. I think making a pocket piece of it could "fix" it, but I also honestly think I'd keep it as-is, out of a flip for awhile, to just let it tone--I have a gorgeous 1906 that doesn't look so good. In spite of that, I think that on my budget, the lot is worth it for that coin alone (it and the large cents would instantly become the oldest coins I own). My mom says it's a horse-trade. What are y'all's opinions? I haven't been doing this long enough to feel confident making my own guesstimate (which is that one of those IHC, after a dip in that verdigris-removing stuff, would almost cover the value of the auction, thereby making the others automatically worth it). I guess is really depends on what the final hammer price will be. IMHO, I wouldn't put too much into the lot. Problem coins will always be problem coins.

Looks like a decent group of coins. If you dont have any of these and the price is fair go for it.

I like the set for fun coins to give to kids or for a nice starter type set. I mean granted they are problem coins but if it goes for cheap I say jump on it.

For 10 bucks? If I were to judge among several grand kids whom to give my "good" coins to, I would use this, or another grouping, as a test of their interest. To a youngster, even a problem coin, if it is old and interesting enough, would hold the child's interest. Your return would be, not in any gain of value of the coins, but of the knowledge that you gain by what these coins would trigger in a potential benefactor.
And even for you, assuming you are a beginner yourself, to spend ten bucks in order to study what NOT to spend a hundred bucks later on is a cheap price to pay for an education which is, too sadly, often learned the hard way.

If I were you, I'd look for a decent damage free 1862 cent that would be less money than what these are priced at. These coins are real dogs.

Id go about $15 on this max. Other auctions will come around with good deals.

the 1862 is corroded, damaged, and cleaned. Should be able to get one of those with those problems for around $5. The rest of the Indians are junk too.

with the above statement but try to keep your bid at $ 13 or under. IMHO, mdpmedia

Thanks, guys! I like the point that it's a good, cheap tool to see what not to spend big bucks on later on, and also the point about testing the waters with kids--my nieces will be getting my collection some day, and while the holed large cent is a huge tragedy from a numismatic point of view, I bet one of the girls would love it as a necklace when they get a little older (and in the meantime, I'm a total sucker for that stuff--I'd leather-wrap it and wear it). Anything I can do to encourage them while they're little is a good thing.
I think I'll keep an eye on this and bid tomorrow before I go to work, if the price holds steady. I could do worse for ten bucks, I think--some acetone and Verdicare (I see you, green 1902 . . . I see you) might reveal some low-level treasures under there.

The auction is closed now. Did you win it?
They are probably worth at least $14.

ninamason, this is an auction I won just a few days ago http://www.ebay.com/itm/17090552302....m1497.l2649You can see for not much more than that $14 the auction went for you can get a really nice 1860-64 IHC. I was thinking I wanted that coin in XF or AU as the AU only runs $60 but I just loved the color of that VF 1863 that I couldn't pass on it for less than $20. I will upgrade later on that type coin but I will keep this one too as I just love the color on it. Maybe you will look back and be glad you spent your money on some problem free coins even though those would have been fun conversation pieces or gifts.
