That's right, I did   It's nothing too extreme, and to be honest, I haven't even taken it out of the shipping box yet, to look at it. I'm gonna do that tomorrow. It's an Olympus SP500-UZ, one that Vermontensium uses, he recommended it. From what he said, it seems to sound easy to use. The USB cord, plugs into the computer, and use the monitor instead of using the small screen. Can't wait to use it!  Edited by yankee1227

You haven't seen any image since joining the Family, that hasn't been with the 500UZ. Older camera, yes. Easy to use, yes. Decent picture quality, yes. That's why I recommended it. I've always liked Olympus point and shoot cameras. With the price I believe you paid, you have a decent, easy to use semi-entry level camera with a few advanced features. Shot freehand:  I do plan on upgrading soon to a DSLR. I may stick with Olympus or go with a Nikon. I already have a 35MM Nikon and I believe the lenses are interchangeable. As far as coin photography, I think you know who that is  He's another moderator here  swcoin.ecrater.com

If you're considering a DSLR, Canon has a bit of an advantage for coin photography. The electronic first shutter curtain, which Canon DSLRs have, reduces vibration which is an advantage at higher magnifications.

On the other hand, the 4000 vertical pixels of a 24MP D3200 means you won't be needing much magnification any time soon. |

The extra pixels increase the effective magnification and reveal more of the vibration. |

The problem with higher pixel count in a fixed sensor size is the pixels get smaller and smaller. This leads to extreme limitations of aperture vs diffraction. I use a Canon T2i, which has 4.3um pixels, and a diffraction limit of f6. The D3200 has 4um pixels so diffraction limit is around f5.6. So you can only take advantage of the camera at high mag if you can keep an EFFECTIVE aperture of f5.6 or larger (smaller number). So let's talk Dollars...
For DX sensor with ~16mm height, magnification to fill the screen is 0.42. So you need a lens with aperture setting of 5.6/1.42=3.92, or f4. At this aperture, DOF will be relatively poor.
So what about letting the lower magnification work for you? Let's calculate filling the sensor only by half, so M=0.21: 5.6/1.21=4.7. DOF will improve with lower magnification and smaller aperture, but this is only a half-stop smaller, and you are losing bigtime in being able to average-out those pixels to improve sharpness in the final image. You are effectively using a 18x12mm, 6MP portion of the sensor!

Congrats yankee. You are one step ahead of me. My Canon P&S crapped out and I'm looking to purchase a new Canon. Problem is I keep spending my camera budget on coins.

i just changed the mp from 14 to 3 and the picture quality is way better is there a program I can use to improve the photos I'm new at picture taking
