http://www.coincommunity.org/galler...hp?pos=-5297It wasn't long after ingesting some of the Navy's powdered eggs that I said: "I think I'm going go buy me a gold coin today." And that's what I did. Took a cab to some coin shop in Charlston and bought 1oz. Krugerrand. Check out that date. What timing! It's right at the start of a two year run in gold that ended at $850. THE MIGHTY MORPHING POWER OF POWDERED EGGS!

O.K. now I know the Navy's eggs are something special, but I wouldn't remember what I ate a week ago, let alone that far back. Good thing you kept the receipt, wasn't it! Moments to remember

I should've had some more of those powdered eggs. Maybe I would had "the timing" to sell in 1980 instead of 82 or 83 at something like $500.

That was still quite the profit. Certainly more than you would have made with the money in the bank!!!
As for powdered eggs, believe it or not I could always stomach them. But, the poly moo (manmade milk for those that don't know) was not good......ever. Putting it on cereal didn't make a difference to me either, that taste will stay with me for the rest of my life, and it is not a good taste!!!!
Regardless, back to the subject at hand. I agree with OldDan, amazing you had the receipt this long!!

So, you're in port and they STILL serve you powdered eggs ?!?!? Jeez, when we were in port they at least fed us real eggs. But that was in 1969 or so.

No no no. We had fresh stuff while in port. But being a Bubblehead by trade, once out on patrol, it was 3 knots to nowhere at 600 feet. We didn't have the liberty of re-supply during our patrols. So after about two weeks, all the fresh stuff was gone, as it will only keep for so long. Very much the bummer. But, we did get surf and turf at halfway night!!!

They did that to us several times with the powdered eggs when we were in port. It meant that there was about to be an all hands working party to bring on stores--on Saturday! That's probably why I decided to go to a coin shop. Doesn't anyone still have some of the stuff from their beginnings? I think I even have a postal money order receipt from Joe Flynn somewhere for a Buffalo nickel I bought from him in 1979. I still have my first ANA card, make of hard plastic instead of flimsy cardboard. You smell that? Do you smell that? diesel, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of diesel in my bug-juice the morning.

Oh sure, but can those shore duty people shovel noodles down their gullets while the ship is hanging 50 degrees to port in the N. Atlantic? "Hang...shovel, hang...shovel...

Not intending to hijack the thread, but if you think that would turn you green Scoutjim, imagine the same "listing" of the boat at 400 ft below the surface. State 5 seas in the North Atlantic are pretty bad, and the turbulence goes very very deep. Kind of unsettling to the people that have motion sickness.... quote: an to me they are Gourmet compared to the Army
You are correct. We were also the ones sleeping in racks and not in tents.. To get things back on track, I have only been collecting for about 8 months, so I do not have something saved that I bought when I was a kid Longnine. But I'm sure some of the longtime collectors certainly have some faded receipts and such...

In a scrapbook, put away somewhere, I have my first ANA card, as well as many which followed. My first ANA card was issued to me in 1961. Speaking of the ANA, I think we get a solid gold pin if we hang on for 50 years. So, I hope I make it to 2011!!

Gary, I think I should get a gold(pin) coin just for making it fifty years...period!HEHEHEHEHE....on another note, I was in the Air Force and spent some time TDY on Army bases and we definitely had better chow than they did. When Marines were at our bases they always raved about how much better the food was....Mike
