Having fun studying ancients but still learning about grading such coins. Here is a nice Lucania Metapontum Stater, c 330-280BC which in excellent condition. I hope the images are good enough for the experts to suggest a grade though I understand no grade can ever be completely accurate from photos. Comments appreciated.

I am no expert at grading these coins, but, in my untrained eyes, I would like to say the grade might be WOW! Nice coin. So I thought I would give another try at attributing this coin. Here is what I found:

Lucania, Metapontion AR Nomos. ca 340-330 BC. LEUKIP-POS, helmeted head of Leukippos right; S below, hound seated left behind / META upward on left, ear of barley with seven grains, leaf to right with dove sitting right upon it & AM below. SNG Cop 1211, SNG ANS 446, HN 1576.

JW, I think you're right on but two questions... six grains or seven, and I believe it is signed AMI not AM... the coins signed AMI belong to the time of Alexander the Molossian's campaign and more specifically to the period when Metapontum was one of his main allies. So, I don't know it that still matches the SNG and HN number?

I really cannot tell too much difference between the first attribution and this one:

Lucania, Metapontion. Circa 330 BC. AR Nomos. Helmeted head of Leukippos right; dog (off flan) behind / Barley ear, leaf to right; AMI below leaf, dove on leaf. SNG ANS 448.

But yours does have "AMI" rather than just "AM". There are others that may match as well. Take a look at this link: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/gree...ntion/i.html

Use your Ctrl/F buttons to search, and type in "helmeted head of Leukippos right" in the search box. That should give you all the choices. Perhaps you can narrow it down since you have the coin in hand. Let me know what you find.

Another beautiful and iconic coin--you have some impressive ancients!
I have a hard time grading ancients when details can vary so much with strike.

Ahahaha => at first, I thought that you were merely playing a joke and that you'd photo-shopped a beard onto an old obverse of Athena!!
