Hey all:

Just bought my first ASE from the mint:
http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=10120

I was wondering how the final coin is packaged. I know it said it is placed in a velvet box... but is the coin actually in a protective cover, or just sitting loose in the velvet box?

I'm hoping for some protect for the poor coin...

Thanks!

It should be in a plastic capsule that will be inside the box, which will be inside another box.

All of the precious metal coins sold by the mint come in a protective capsule with either an outer box of cardboard or of plastic, metal and velvet. Be aware that the plastic capsule can be loosen in transit and the coin fall out of it's capsule/cardboard box if the outer shipping box is opened in the wrong way. It shouldn't happen with the proof ASE, but there are horror stories of collectors finding proof coins in the packing material having completely shaken free of the protective packaging in transit. The packaging for a single ASE is quite small relative to the standard shipping boxes PBGS uses. It's the same sized box whether you order 2 5oz. ATB pucks or a single $6.95 bronze medal.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I mentioned my concern to my coworker, a non collector, about me not thinking the mint would not protect the coin and have it just bouncing around inside the velvet box during shipping, and his response was "Well maybe they would just use a piece of tape to hold the coin down,".

*Face Palm*.

I look forward to it arriving. And I am sure if the coin came loose, I'd just have the mint replace the coin (they seem pretty good about returns).
