As many of you know, I have been working with a metal detecting club in GB helping with attribution. Today I received an email with the following:

Quote:
We have also had a few more digs, I am just having all the pics edited and then will send you lots more, one site we had recently produced well over 100 roman coins between 25 of us in a day.

Also do you know anyone who would be interested in Solidus? as a customer of ours is looking to sell some of his collection over the next few months, there are about 10 in his collection in total
Arcadius, Honorius, Theodosius etc all in mint or near mint condition.

I am also looking for serious offers on the Roman Millie fiorie 1st c Brooch I sent you a picture of previously if you know any interested buyers please let me know.

I told him we would need to see images and know prices, but is anyone here interested in the Solidus or the brooch (I can't find the image to the brooch so asked for a new one)?

I am interested in knowing how a UK club finds mint condition solidi they can sell. Field finds of individual coins would seem likely to be damaged or worn so they would not be mint condition while mint coins tend to be protected like a group in a pot might be but that would make them Treasure Trove which would have to have been handled by the government and have paperwork to be legal. I suspect these will not be 'mint' in the sense collectors expect but photos will tell that. Certainly it is possible to find ten solidi over the years that would be legal but I'd ask our UK members to comment on the question before buying them.

I'm not sure how to read the email. If I read it correctly, they have a customer who owns some Solidus he wants to sell. He didn't say they had found the coins for this customer, but that is also a way to read that sentence. You are very correct about the "mint" condition. We shall see if, or when, he sends images.

Do they find some decent stuff? Do they clean their finds themselves? What do they do with them once you attribute them and did they ever let you buy any pieces you liked?

Many questions for you there... though my budget wouldn't stretch to a solidus.

i have offered to buy many of the coins and they are working on a list and price. As far as cleaning, I believe they clean their own, and from some of the coins I've seen, they have been harshly treated. But some are pretty good as well. I sure would love to go out with them some time.
