I started collecting walkers around 6 months ago and am wondering if so far I have made a good deal? 34-47 are in VF condition and my 38 d is in VF+. Below 34 are all g-f condition. I am into it around $750 (including dansco album) and am only missing the 21 p and d and 8 more "commons". How have I done so far?

Yeah, show us pics, but it sounds like you've done well so far. Greysheet says a full set in good or better should go for a little over $1000. You are are about on track for that.

buy the junk (common) dates near melt, then you're doing okay

I still think they would look better in a Whitman Album. That 38D is really climbing in cost at coin shows lately. Your doing great so far.

I love the Walking Liberty half set. It was began when I was a boy and then it was a fill the hole mission regardless of condition. With age my tastes were refined and I found myself replacing many of the lower grade coins. Now I am short the 1916 s, 1921, and 1921 d but I will not fill the hole with a low grade coin. I like full breast in liberty and the eagle.

Muddler, that is my goal, to eventually see the set in AU or MS, but I have a lifetime to do that so I'm in no rush

One advantage to replacing worn coins with higher quality is it builds my 90% stash.

And.. to the original poster, I would say you did very well for $750.00 on the coins you purchased.. And.. Welcome to CCF..

The 1938-D is climbing in price? For years, it was stagnant. Much against my father's wishes, I spent $28 on a fine years ago. It was the only one missing from the collection. He NEVER bought a coin. The collection is long gone, EXCEPT for the 1921 p, d and s and the 38-D. THOSE I am going to keep.

I had the good fortune to complete a set (date and mint mark) of Walking Liberty halves a few years ago - all are in the G-4 to VG-8 range.....not an outstanding set, but a complete set.

A lot of sellers tend to undergrade "junk" silver - so it's pretty easy to find F-VF pieces at "average circulated" prices (but how I hate that term!).
I've got one of every Philly mint, plus the "S" mints in years where there were no Philly coins - 1923, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1933.

I absolutely hate the term junk in reference to Walkers, Bens, Barbers etc. I really dont like it for the moderns either. The halves dimes and quarters I do sell for melt I simply call melt. Rupre, definitely a good start. The 21 pds and 38 d are going to be the four that kill you for AU. I would suggest getting them now before they increase even further. And since we are showing off 38 Ds
