Some of you folks may know this coin so please don't give it away right off the bat. Clash? Something else?

I'm going to guess that this is a lamination defect. The loss of definition to the legend on the affected part of the coin is what leads me to this conclusion.

There was one that came up this evening on ebay that had a big section peeled away right uu to the eagle's tailfeathers.

Looks like it has a coating on it or dipped in something Wax?
Chance is probably correct, lamination.

It's an early op-ed on our economy. The eagle is about to fly into a wall.

kind of looks like a lamination type error to me as well. I know I have said it before but will say it again, error coins are not something I am very educated on but have learned a little here and there by topics that have been discussed on this forum. That being said I could definitely be wrong but that was my first impression when I saw it

I was snooping around early this morning and found the thread on the other place ... actually by doing a google "image" search.

Rick's explanation is as good as any...and probably the gold standard to most, but I still feel it could be a lamination issue, just because part of the obverse is unscathed.

How would that work. Did the lamination fall off before or after it was struck?
