Being an over enthusiatic newbie I have bought some stuff that doesn't fit into what I want to collect now that I am getting my bearings. So would a coin show be a good place to try to trade these coins for other I do want. If so what do I need to watch out for? The National Money Show is here in Dallas next month so I figure that might be a good place to try to trade.

Just know the rarity of what you have and condition levels and just how high a premium it will bring, so as to get equal offers....
Just remember at a coin show you wanting to trade gives the dealer the advantage as he most likely has zero motive to trade, so they will be looking to get the better end of the deal, but that is just the norm in any genre....
You never know you may find something you really want from someone who really wants some of your items and there in lies a good deal where both parties leave happy with an equal opportunity of gain, be it long or short term....

also as a rule of thumb at coin shows, if theres dealers that sell different types of coins, say a dealer only sells only.. -old coins -bullion -notes Try not to trade or sell bullion to an old coins dealer, or a note to a bullion dealer, or you know what I mean, because they probably do not want that stuff. I would go to a dealer who sells the product that you are selling, or sells similar products in your genre. Or if a dealer sells everything, sell him everything.

It cant hurt to take a shot but dont expect it to be quick or easy. Like said above know the value of what you have that way you can know what kind of deal youre getting.
Also dont be scared to say no and walk away if you arent happy with any potential deal.

Quote: Also dont be scared to say no and walk away if you arent happy with any potential deal. This is terrific advice and we should all take it to heart. My wife has this developed to a science, especially when buying a car. I almost feel sorry for the car sales people.

In a word "no" not a good place to sell at. ebay fees suck but at least you will get true value there, well minus the 12% fee after paypal.

Very true! ebay fees is really high. I would have thought they will charge less for bullion.

Personally I am more interested in trading than selling. Filling holes in series. Since I am trying to reposition my collection it isn't all about value for me so if the deal isn't quite even value wise I can still be happy with it. Plus it seems cheaper than trading where I have shipping or ebay fees.

You can always put up what you want/need and what you can offer on her for trading w/ other member.... it should be a lot more fun and rewarding. I can guarantee you that you will not get the same value/appreciation if you are to trade w/ the dealer at the show (compare to trading on CCF). About half of my coin collections are from trading & buying from fellow CCF members.
Btw, you only need 12 more "quality posts" to be able to set up a "trade list/post".... in the mean time, you can set up a "want list/post".
